he's been qualified, and any team can sign him to a offer sheet (are the ducks near the cap ?)

No offense to Wildcat, but it looks like the three years and $2.3 million was a lot of smoke.

Honestly, if he wants much more than that, he's trade bait. Perfect RFA sniping target at $2.9 million.

Yeah what ever happened to that 7 million contract that was rumored to have been signed twice? Maybe Burke just figured this is how he's getting his 08 first round pick, since there hasn't been interest for Bryz.

Maybe for first OA in 2009. Otherwise fat chance.

Bryz = unnecessary (he's not going to play much this year)
Penner = ~30 goal scorer

No offense taken...I've said that I'm wrong more than I am right....At the end of the day I go based on my information and make a judgment call, which leave me open for criticism.

As for Penner, I double checked with my sources and I am told he has been signed, however, there was a problem with the contract (don't know - didn't ask) and it was never sent to central registry.

They qualified him because they didn't want to risk losing him as a UFA should they don't get whatever the issue was worked out....The Ducks were protecting themselves.

I've been told that the problem has been fixed and something "should" be announced in the next 14 days.

Sounds like someone forgot to dot an i.

It would be really entertaining to find out what the problem was. But likely too embarrassing that they'd never tell.

With the Ducks absurdly close to the cap at the moment, I hope a team doesn't do some funny business with Penner. Unfortunatley, I could see it happening...

Losing Nieds - 43.25

"Gut feeling"
Trading Bryz+Penner for a solid young D-man (Possibly to St.Louis) - 43

Hey, don't laugh at my gut.

Seriously, i think Penner might be traded now that Bert was acquired. I don't think either of them can be effective with Andymac & Kunitz and Penner is the odd man out now without a contract.

Oh no, I wasn't laughing at your gut. Sorry, I kind of worded that wrong. I actually think that Penner could indeed be traded. Just with all of the signings and stuff, my mind is really spinning.

Who on St. Louis would you be looking for? Solid young d-man? Woywitka, Backman, Brewer...?

Remember teams can be over the cap until the regular season starts... they'd just have to dump someone else in order to keep Penner if he does sign an offer sheet...

An offer sheet on Penner does absolutely nothing. All the Ducks have to do is move Hiller to the Pirates, and poof, 3.2 million off the cap. As already noted, we can go above the cap if we want to match the offer. And also, we can go even FURTHER over the cap without moving Hiller since 2.3 million of that cap hit are incentives.

So basically the Ducks can match any offer sheet they want, unless it's so ridiculously high that we might just prefer the picks. Of course we'd have to make some moves afterward since we are above our own stated budget, but we won't lose Penner unless we want to.
