It's too bad that this means the end for Nylander, but he did this himself. He could have locked up 2nd line center for just a little extra money..now he's headed to a team like Washington.
I've always been a fan of Drury..there is not a more clutch player in the league in my opinion.
I don't really get how this removes the youth infusion. We all wanted either one of Gomez or Drury and resign Nylander. Now we have Gomez and Drury who is younger than Nylander. Plus Shanny, Straka are both going to be on 1 year deals. I still think the opportunity is there for younger guys on the wings going forward and maybe we over-rate some of our prospects and the organization who sees them play way more than we do understood that.

well now that they are locked up for 7 and 5 years, Dubinsky and Anisimov can't hope for anything more than 3rd line or converting to wing. The only way we have any youth infusion (outside of Staal) this year is if both Hollweg and Orr are regularly scratched. And if their getting Hollweg and Orr minutes, will it even be worth playing them? I'm not sure what Slats is gonna do if Dubinsky and Dawes tear it up in pre-season to make room? Does he start giving players away?
If Dubinsky wins,
Straka-Dubinksy-Callahan
Avery-Betts-Cullen
If Dawes wins,
Straka-Cullen-Callahan?
Dawes-Betts-Avery? lines are looking a bit fubar'd.
I think you're also looking at a guy like Korpikoski getting moved up.
As for future centers, we'll cross that bridge if and when our prospects are ready. Right now Dubinsky is probably looking at another year in the aHL or he could possibly beat out Cullen for a spot.
Prucha,in my eyes, will not be on the opening night roster.
Anisimov is at LEAST one AHL season away, possibly two. The kid is a long term project, not a kid who I would put good money on stepping in right away.
Either way I sense a trade for a defenseman coming.
Not only that, but Drury can slid to the wing when Shanny retires and Dubinsky is ready. Cullen can also slide to the wing if neccessary.....but IMO, Dubinsl wont be ready for a top 6 role for at least 2 seasons...he JUST turned 21. Same thing with Anisimov..the guy is 20, I beleive.....IMO, our front office has built this PERFECTLY!!!!!!
This absolutely makes us a serious Cup contender. The only thing wrong with this deal is that expectations will be high and the Rangers are'nt sneaking up on anyone any more.
Two big assets added, the center position significantly strengthened, and the only thing we give up is money. We still have all our great kids in the pipeline and some character guys to give them leadership as they mature.

Outstanding!!
for serious.. i am very very excited however for things to play out
I have been trying to post on here all day. I couldn't believe when I saw Drury signed here. I was checking up if the Gomez signing was confirmed, and when I saw we signed Drury, I jumped out of my chair. He is exactly the type of player we want our young players to learn from. Also he will make the perfect captain after Jagr leaves. No doubt these contracts were long, but I truely believe Gomez, and Drury are going to thrive here.
This is UNBELIEVABLE! Gomez will be the guy to carry the puck on the first line and Marty Straka the second. Drury is just a classic heart and soul player, and hopefully will be prototypical Ranger. Now we have serious depth on both the top 2 lines.
Glen Sather- not dead yet apparently! To get Cherepanov, Gomez and Drury in the span of 2 weeks is our Birthday, Christmas gifts all in one fell swoop!
Anisimov is a year away at least and Cherepanov will likely play for Avangard for another year too, so no worries there!
Stoked! Just Stoked! They are fuming in San Jose and LA now that the top 2 free agents are gone...and Briere? You can have him Philly.
Well, it's not a huge deal, but I've always really liked that Sather's been able to avoid handing out NMC clauses to date. According to the Daily News, we now have our first exception to the rule. Hopefully Gomez with 7 years on his contract doesn't have the same clause.
