I think our 2nd and 3rd lines might get similar ice-time though.

Pencil in the top line guys

Gagne-Briere-Knuble for about 20-21 minutes or so.

Second line Hartnell-Carter-Lupul for 16-17 maybe. I do want to see Lupul with Briere on the PP though.

3rd line Umberger-Richards-Upshall also for 16-17 minutes. The main problem is that all of those guys would probably be on the PK, so Upshall might not get as many even strength minutes. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing

Gagne-Briere-Lupul (Gags maybe 45 goals with Briere, Lupul maybe 30??).

Hartnell-Carter-Upshall (good line, Carter and Upshall have some chemistry, high energy, should be creating good chances on the forecheck to set up Carter's wrister).

Umberger-Richards-Knuble (good checking line, hardworking with some scoring touch).

My main concern of course would be how Knuble would fit in on the 3rd line, but I'd want to at least give it a try.

Bill Meltzer is chruning out some great work over at der Buzz:

But it still remains to be seen if the Flyers have the makeup of a contending team. To me, it all depends on the extent to which Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Scotty Upshall and Braydon Coburn step up this season.

I think the best thing would be to have Knuble on the third line. He has shown chemistry with Richards in the past, and plays a good two way game. I am a little nervous with Lupul on the top line as he is not fast and is not physical. I think Upshall or Hartnell should be on that line to add some grit.

I'm starting to think Knuble will stay on the top line. Briere and Gagne need his size to work the boards. Upshall will be the one demoted to the third line, which will be ok because him and Richards will make for one feisty line. If I had my way, I'd put Kapanen on the 4th and Eager on the 3rd with Richie and Scottie.

Definitely agree about Knuble for the 3rd line, he could probably score 20-30 with some PP time.

I'd want to try Lupul with a playmaker just at first because the rumors say he has such a great shot and I'd love to see Briere giving him the puck. If that doesn't work out, then I try Upshall probably.

Not sure if Eager is ready. I'd rather see Sami who is still quick and can create some chances.

I think camp will have a lot to do with who goes where. If Eager really impresses in camp, then I wouldn't mind trying him there, but I have my doubts right now.

Fact of the matter is, we are probably going to see every combination we are mentioning on here as they change them constantly.

Not going to get into the Eager argument with you again, but Kapanen's rapidly declining offensive skills are not really what Richards and Upshall need. Defensively that line is great, but offensively it could go either way. I'm leaning towards "nightmare" at this point, rather than "pleasant surprise".

At least Eager has some potential upside and the size that will help those two smaller players.

As long as Carter develops some chemistry with Hartnell, I would love a third line of Eager-Richards-Upshall. Would be a tough as nails line, and hell to play against. Richards and Upshall could put up 40 points each and maybe Eager develops with them and pops in 10-12 goals.

A 4th line of Kapanen ??????? Downie would be cool.

I forgot about that. The RW on that line is going to have to know how to work dirty and throw his weight around. My only concern is that Knuble will be 5 steps behind the speed of Gags and Briere. But, perhaps that is over-analyzing. Knuble is just such a team guy and brings a good set of skills to the table that he can find a fit in so many places on this team.

I kind of want Downie on this team next year. Kapanen would be a good player to have with him, as an older mentor who plays the game with respect and is defensively responsible. Unless Umberger is traded, he'll be their centre.

I do love the sound of an Eager-Richards-Upshall line. I think it would drive other teams crazy on the forecheck and has just as much offensive potential as it would with Kapanen on that line.

I'm not worried about Knuble's speed. It's not like he's Hatcher or Rathje, he's got average NHL speed and he'll keep up with them if he has to.

If Umberger is gone, I guess Potulny is there as there are no other centers I can think of ready to come to the NHL. Come to think of it, Kapanen Potulny Downie might be a good line. Downie's playmaking with Potulny finishing and Kapanen adding speed and two way play and guidance to the youngsters.

How many of our players haven't played for one of the following teams:

Team USA
Team Finland
Canadian WJC Team

Team USA - Knuble, Hatcher, Umberger

Team Finland - Niitty, Kukkonen, Kapanen, Timonen

Canadian WJC Team - Biron, Gagne, Briere, Hartnell, Carter, Upshall, Richards, Lupul, Smith, Coburn, Gauthier

That leaves Eager, who played for Canada in the U-18's and Picard

Future: Parent, Downie & Giroux are Canadian WJCer's ... vanReimsdyk -Team USA

Congrats on your signings and trades!

The NHL is a better league with Philly in the thick of things. You guys were missed last year.

Now go out there and kick sidney's butt!

Looks pretty good - I would definitely like to see more production out of Carter and Upshall - more like 65 and 55 or so

He's a cheap body to play on the 4th line. I'd rather Downie who can play a physical role, than a skilled player like Ruzicka or signing some scrub off the street.

A couple pieces above that I really disagree with

I am sorry, but if Lupul only puts up 35 points, that Pitkanen trade is an absolute robbery in favor of Edmonton. Pitkanen put up more assists alone as a dman.

Richards should put up more then 30 as well, I want 40 from him and 60 from Carter.

Picard put up 22 as a rookie last year, on a terrible team. If he plays the full season with us, he should get more then that.

This is like the nicest thing ever said to us by an opposing fan. Thank you oh, so much. As for the last line, that is my goal for our team as well.
