He didn't say this year though, he just said they'd win the Cup. The core of the team is young still, so they have some years together unless Muckler or future GM decides to break it up. Perhaps this is Alfredsson's way of further inspiring the team.
They have as good a shot as anybody, so I don't see anything wrong with this. Besides people usually forget about it if they don't come true anyway.
I think its pretty stupid myself. He guaranteed a series win against the Devils and we all know how that one played out. Why give your opponents even more reasons to bear down and take it to you with great vengeance? Someone says that to the press and all the other teams will want to be the first ones to bash his teeth in with these nostradamus proclamations.

Actually what he said was "I guarantee I will get a stylish cut." Not "I guarantee a Stanley Cup."
The reporter misunderstood his Swedish accent, that's all.
First of all, the question was brought to him. Consider how you would reply to this question:
Will you win the cup?
- You have two options here: yes or no.
I sure as heck would not say no in Alfredsson's case
There was a second question after this...
Do you guarantee it?
- Alfredsson as a leader and a captain wants to show faith in his guys, so he says yes.
There are two things to keep in mind here: a) Alfredsson did not say THIS YEAR and b) Alfredsson did not bring this up - a reporter asked him almost forced him to say yes.
I dont see what the big deal is, the sens have a good chance to win the cup with the core they have. Ottawa almost has all the pieces together, but they really need Lalime to get hot.

Geez, he's not under oath or anything.. Here's what I think he should have said...
Will you win the cup?
Well, If we play up to our potential, we should have a very good chance, but it takes a lot of hard work and it would be a team effort.
Do you guarantee it?
Haha.. there are no guarantees in life except death and taxes. All I can say about that is with our team we should have a good a shot as any to come away with the Cup
Now that is what I would have said. To guarantee a cup win just gives your opponents something to put on their dressing room wall.
