Ducks sign Shane Hnidy

According to our friend Eklund (e5) and "confirmed" by WildCat:

"HDONE DEAL
Shane Hnidy to Anaheim is an (e5) Talented kid and a solid pickup that makes the Ducks tougher still..." http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=8460

"Looks like the Ducks have signed him. It's appears to be a two year deal....no financial term known yet." http://www.allducks.com/forums/index...howtopic=16269

Could end up being a good signing. He suffered in Atlanta with their average defense...this could help rejuvenate his career.

I like the signing.

Burke has something up his sleeve. Could Penner be the odd man out? He was in Carlyle's dog house for quite some time...

How many players are currently under contract now?

Penner leaving would suck.

I would only forgive Burke if we're looking at Penner + Bryz for... well.. i am not sure what I'd want in return...

Why the heck wouldnt' we keep Penner?

We're fine. We needed to bring in at least one veteran d-man to replace DiPenta/Jackman.

To be honest, I wouldn't say he suffered in Atlanta, rather I'd say quite the opposite: He actually overacheived heavily on last years squad. He played much better than anyone had anticipated much to eveyrone's happiness. IF he can keep up the play he did in Atlanta with the Ducks you've got a nice thing going there......

I wouldn't mind having him back on the Thrashers, but to say he suffered on that team is not quite correct..

Alright, fair enough. You obviously watched more Atlanta games than I did. Sorry about that.

Penner isn't going anywhere Burke specifically said that he wanted to lock him up long term.

Burke also said he wouldn't trade Fedorov. Anyway, if he is not giving out Penner, I think someone is retiring for sure and only he knows it.

No worries - actually I thought it would be better news for you guys anyway, if he can keep that level up play up.

If you compare Shane Hnidy from his first season in Atlanta to how he played last season, theres a huge difference, for the better... He went from a questionable bottom pairing guy to someone who was quite reliable and steady back there. You could see Hartley's increased level of confidence in him because he ended up winning a spot over McCarthy and Vishnevski by the time the 2nd half of the season rolled around.

I can see him getting 20-30 pts + 8-9 fights and over100 pims.

Whatever Burke touches turns to gold

Penner isn't going anywhere.....Penner doesn't have arbitration rights and Burke basically has all the control here....Burke and Co. want to have him on a long term deal....It sounds like instead of going with the original three year deal, they may be instead talking about making it longer like four or five years, taking him to UFA status.

Yeah, I think its that they aren't struggling to sign Penner, they are struggling to lock him up for a long time.

I'm just worried if all these signings will hurt their ability to do the same with Perry and Getzlaf next season.

Ugh, I hope not. I actually like the short term approach.

They are working to change the term so they can lower their cap number.....They can front load or back load the contract and that's what they are doing....They are trying shift cap dollars from this season to later years.

What?

They can front or backload the contract all they want, but it's the same cap hit every year. That doesn't make sense, WC.

Well if the original deal was three years at 7 mil that's like 2.33 a year. But if it's like 5 years at 9 mil for an average of 1.8 a year. So you front load the first year at like 4 mil than the rest is spread out 1.25 a year. That way Pens gets a hell of a lot more in the first year and also gets a longer contract. I don't think it'd play out like that but that's the logic behind it.
