Salary Cap issues

With Lundqvist, Avery, Shanahan, and Prucha still left to sign, how has the signings of Drury and Gomez affected the salary cap? This year's cap will be 50.3 million.

I think they'll be fine. They know what they're doing.

The bigger issue is who gets to wear #23?

After the Gomez & Drury signings, there is a $38.265 cap hit for next season.

That leaves about $12 million to resign Shanahan, Avery, Prucha, Hossa, & Lundqvist.

Shanahan: 3 mil
Lundy: 5 mil
Prucha: 1 mil
Avery: 2 mil
Hossa: 1 mil

The Rangers had $26.349 committed before today which includes Kasparaitis

$7.357 million for Gomez and $7.05 million for Drury

Becomes $40.756 million

Add Staal at $855,000 and it becomes $41.611

Figure $4.5 million for Lundqvist,$4 million for Shanahan,$2 million for Avery,$850,000 for Prucha and $750,000 for Hossa

$53,7110,000-Kasparaitis money-$2.989 million=$50.722

No back up goalie-Valiquette $617,500

Wonder if they look to lop off Malik's $2.5 million or Cullen's $2.875 million. Some teams won't fill their needs in FA.Everytime I refresh TSN,a player goes off the board.A handful of good players are left

I was wondering about moving Malik or Cullen as well. I really gotta think they're planning some kind of trade in the future. Malik and Cullen are replaceable and make money that's actually moveable at this point, so it'd make some sense.

i think we should get rid of both cullen and malik. one of prucha or callahan will be on the 4th line if we dont. Trade cullen and put avery as the third line center that opens up some possibilities.

the cap number is the average over the contract. so ih someone get a 2 year deal first year 6 mil and 2nd year 4 mil, the cap hit is 5

I think you're def. looking at some trades here.

Shanahan to me is going to be a LOW signing that is heavy in bonus' so that isn't a concern for me.

Cullen could certainly be moved, though I think the Rangers wait and see how Dubinsky does against him in camp.

Prucha is good as gone to me, especially with emergence of Callahan. I think he's part of a package in an upcoming trade.

Hossa is on the bubble again, especially when you look at the current roster. I just can't see him beating Straka, Shanahan, Jagr or Avery. He's going to have his work cut out for him.

I think you're also looking at support guys possibly making a push (possibly Korpikoski).

I think Shanny gets $1.5M, plus another $1.5M in bonuses that he can obtain with no sweat like GP, 20 goals, 20 assists, etc. Hossa could be gone and so too Malik if the Souray rumors persist.

Shanny's gonna take like 1-2 mil with a ton of incentives, because the incentives don't count against the cap.

Prucha produces and is not that expensive. I doubt he is gone. With the contracts we signed today players like Prucha are very valuable to your team because of their low salary. He got QO so I doubt he is going to get $800T. Maybe a gradual stepup on a multi year deal.

Exactly...

Guys like Tyutin, Girardi, Callahan, Prucha, and Staal are all gold now. Anyone who can play while making very little money is huge value.

I think you guys are a bit too optimistic, because some things are really going to have to be worked out. When I see a guy like Bertuzzi looking for $3.5 million, while the Wings want to give him a low base with incentive, I don't see how a more proven player like Shanny would take $1.5 mil. The guy was way hot early, and could easily put up 30-35 next year.

Lundqvist is a top goalie, a flat $5 million would be a steal. Avery, Prucha and Hossa for $3.5 million? Sounds nice, but doubt it happens.

Something is going to have to give. Are the Rags that high on Shanny that they'll pursue him if the bidding gets over $3 million? I realize he wants to stay, but I could see him back in Detroit if the Rags don't pony up.

Any chance this is the year they try to ship out Montoya? That frees up almost $2 million and could definitely bring in a nice return, maybe prospects/picks which won't count against the cap for a few years. I'd think a lot of teams would be interested in Al.

Here's my math on next year's salaries: We're currently at $37 million, with the assumption Kasparaitis will remain in Hartford, thus not affecting the Rangers' salary cap.

Here's the current salary breakdown (as of 7/1/07):

Scott Gomez - 7,357,000
Chris Drury - 7,000,000
Jaromir Jagr - 4,180,000 (thanks Leonsis)
Martin Straka - 3,300,000
Paul Mara - 3,000,000
Matt Cullen - 2,800,000
Marek Malik - 2,500,000
Michal Rozsival - 2,300,000
Fedor Tyutin - 1,025,000
Marc Staal - 850,000
Thomas Pock - 650,000
Stephen Valiquette - 635,000
Blair Betts - 615,000
Ryan Callahan - 575,000
Daniel Girardi - 550,000

To be signed:
Brendan Shanahan
Henrik Lundqvist
Petr Prucha
Sean Avery
Marcel Hossa

Rangers made a big splash today. A lot of money to tie up on 2 players like that. If the Salary Cap comes down in the next few years, it will get a little messy.

Based on my calculations and estimating the remaining FA contracts, we're right at the cap. This is with 13 forwards, 6 d-men, and 2 goalies, so we need to at least carve out enough for a spare d-man. Candidates to be traded are Malik, Mara, and Cullen. Everyone else is either too important to the team to trade (Jagr, Straka, Shanny, Roszival, Drury, and Gomez) or makes so little that any replacement would make almost as much as the player leaving, so there'd be no real space cleared.

Forwards
Jagr 4.94
Straka 3.3
Cullen 2.875
Betts 0.615
Hollweg 0.513
Orr 0.538
Callahan 0.575
Drury 7.05
Gomez 7.357

D-men
Malik 2.5
Rozsival 2.1
Tyutin 0.988
Mara 3
Girardi 0.75
Pock 0.668

Valiquette 0.618
Total 38.387

Free Agents
Shanahan 3
Prucha 1.2
Hossa 0.8
Avery 2
Lundqvist 5
Total 12

Total Cap 50.387

I think the Rangers will be about 1-2 million under the cap, even with all the signings today. I don't see shanny getting more than 2.5 million and lundqvist more than 4 or possibly 4.5. Prucha has stated he doesn't care about the money he just wants to be a ranger. So 800K for him is not out the question.

The terms of Orr & Hollweg's contracts aren't available as far as I know, but as long as they both stay at about 600k, and the following players resign for these totals, we'll be just above the cap at $50.7m. This is basically highest case scenario, so we should be fine!

Brendan Shanahan (4m?)
Henrik Lundqvist (4m?)
Petr Prucha (1.5m?)
Sean Avery (2m?)
Marcel Hossa (1m?)
