I remember hearing somewhere that it was a number of smaller cheques, once every two weeks. I'm not certain on that though.

They get paid by the game I think. Like a player called up from the minors to the NHL team's roster for three games will be paid 3/82 of his NHL salary.

actually i think the posters above me are correct, every two weeks they get a check for however many games they were on the NHL roster times their salary divided by 82 games.

so if you make $6 million a year and play 5 games in a two week stretch, your pre-tax check would be about $365,853.65. Not bad, at all.
