Official: Shanahan Re-signs

Quote:
The Rangers and Brendan Shanahan are on the verge of completing a one-year deal, with the club seeking league approval on the structure of the bonuses that will be included in the 38-year-old winger's contract, The Post has learned.

It is believed that Shanahan, who told The Post on June 20 he would work with the Blueshirts in order to grant the team as much cap maneuverability as possible, will sign for a base of approximately $2.5M with an additional $1.5-2.5M in readily attainable bonuses.

"Glen [Sather] has been really good in communicating with me while he was dealing with the [Henrik Lundqvist and Sean Avery] arbitration issues," Shanahan told The Post on Saturday. "I said all along I had no desire to test the market or accept other offers

This news will make getting through work, a lot easier today. Shany is the man, and good job by Sather.

I don't like the concept of bonuses counting towards the 08-09 cap.Up to 7.5 %

Eh, the bonuses are annoying, but again...the Rangers are trying to go for it this year. My bet is that he's not back next year and the Rangers try to replace him with a guy like Cherepanov.

Psst....it's not like he is holding out. The guy was taken to arbitration by NYR, and that is their right. To say you've lost a lot of respect for a guy that has could be looked at as a top reason for this franchises' turnaround is a little premature. Don't ya think?

As far as Shanny goes, this is great. The Rangers look like they're sticking by their word to at least give him a contract after they sort out the rest of their RFA's and with all the UFA movement that began on July 1, and Shanny said he'd give the organization all the time in the world so he can be brought back into the fold. 07-08 is going to be pretty damn exciting.

Well that tells me that Shanny wants between 4-5M a year.

I do not think (and I am not 100% sure) that he is eligible for bonuses.

It's been reported all over the place that Shanny's deal will be heavily bonus/incentive-laden.

Well Shanny was injured but not long term. Was there any contract in new NHL that would cover bonuses? Shanny wants 4-5M. He wants to stay in NY. Which is cool.

Like I said in my previous post I am not 100% on bonuses rules in new NHL. You did not tell me anything new. I do not think it is possible to have bonuses in Shannys case. I mean if it was possible, Leafs would do it with Sundin. Sign him 2.5M one year and give 2.5M bonus. Maybe I am wrong because I am not sure what the rules are. Prove me wrong?

He is, as long as his contract is no longer than 1 year

You asked for it

page 189 of the CBA.Shanahan falls under the underlined portion

P.S. -

Nice job Rangerboy.

Your navigation skills of the CBA are duly noted.

Thanks for the clarification, again.

not totally thrilled about shanny getting signed before lundqvist. part of the reason to delay his deal was to get henrik and avery under contract and then structure shanny's deal around those to fit him under the cap since we've got more flexibility with him due to the bonuses. we should be saving that cap room till lundqvist gets signed.

True, but it would be worse if Avery and Hossa signed before him, then i wouldnt be happy. If its Shanny then Hank - i'lll live with it.

Getting Henrik signed should've been the #1 priority going into the offseason. Now thats its taking so long i just want him signed. End of story.

Well the cap for 08-09 will probably increase...again

The NHL revenues were $2.3 billion. An increase to $2.5 billion results in

Quote:
The $2.5-billion NHL's salary cap
Cap midpoint: $43.9-million
Floor: $35.9-million
Ceiling: $51.9-million
Quote:
That doesn't seem all that bad: After all, the ceiling has risen just $1.6-million from where it will sit this season. But what's not taken into account is the 5-per-cent bump which comes at the discretion of the NHLPA, something likely to come into play (as it did this year) and that would put the $2.5-billion NHL's cap at roughly $54.5-million.

All that said, I think $2.5-billion is a generous estimate but I'm no economist (surprising, I know). It's certainly reasonable downright guaranteed, really that the league will hit this target by the following year, and that revenues will continue to rise and push the cap further north
.
http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2007/07/c...ement-how.html

James Mirtle does a good job explaining where the 2008-09 salary could be with a $200 million increase in revenue(the Rangers 14% increase in tickets will help)and the NHLPA bumps it up by 5%

$54.5 million upper limit
$46.5 mid-point
$38.5 million lower limit/floor

I am quite sure that none of this is happening in a vacuum. I think Avery has no interest in the Rags offer, since he's the one that filed for arbitration. Plus, I would argue that Shanny is a more important player for the Rags than Avery.
