Actually I checked and we will have an extra 3m once Kaspar's contract comes off the books. So we're all set.

It's all good. He's signed, they can tie up whatever loose ends are left, and I can go relax in my pool in peace. Amen.

Someone give Sather a cigar.

I'm sorry if someone asked this already, but what's the cap hit on Shanny and Hank's deals, and how much cap space do they have left? Is it tre that some loop hole exists where a team who signs a player over 35 doesn't get a cap hit til next year?

I wasn't sure, because there was some talk that the CP got the Shanny numbers wrong because Irish Blues was reporting them differently on his site, and blah blah blah.

So I wasn't sure who believes IB over the CP, etc.

The first part of the question depends on the salary cap figure you're relying on in making the assessment. The cap is at 50.3, Kaspar is at roughly 3 mill, we have around 2.8 mill, and henrik signed for 4.5. we would have around 49 mill committed AFTER taking Kaspar off and about 1.3 left for Hossa and Avery.

If you were going by Henrik's old reported salary fig of 2.5, then that would be roughly 47 mill comitted and after signing for the figs you estimated, we'd have a salary cap fig of 50.25. Not much wiggle room considering we usually had around 2 mill (I think) left the last few years.

As for the second part, I was referring to the ability of the rangers to get outside help that might cost more if there stuck in a bind.

Also, I'm not sure if there are bonuses for some players (i.e. Callhan and girardi) that are counted in this years cap. I was looking at nhlcapnumbers and it seems they aren't listed. Sorry bud, not trrying to be argumentative here, just trying to be realistic about our cap situation..

Below is my list of contracts. I believe that a trade is all but inevitable, because Shanny will play 10 games to get at least 4.5 million, and I highly doubt that Sather will allow us to bite into next year's cap more than a trivial amount. Or perhaps I just hope not.

------------------ Pos ------ Age ------ Salary

Known contracts:
Jagr, Jaromir ------ R ------- 34 ------- 4.94
Shanahan, Brendan -L ------- 37 ------- 5.30 *
Gomez, Scott ----- C ------- 27 ------- 7.35
Drury, Chris ------- C ------- 31 ------- 7.05
Straka, Martin ----- C ------- 33 ------- 3.30
Cullen, Matt ------- C ------- 29 ------- 2.88
Prucha, Petr ------- C ------- 23 ------- 1.60
Betts, Blair -------- C ------- 26 ------- 0.62
Hollweg, Ryan ----- C ------- 23 ------- 0.51
Orr, Colton -------- R ------- 24 ------- 0.54
Callahan, Ryan ----- R ------- 21 ------- 0.58

Mara, Paul --------- D ------- 26 ------- 3.00
Malik, Marek ------- D ------- 31 ------- 2.50
Rozsival, Michal ---- D ------- 27 ------- 2.30
Tyutin, Fedor ------ D ------- 22 ------- 1.03
Pock, Thomas ------ D ------- 24 ------- 0.67
Girardi, Daniel ------ D ------- 22 ------- 0.55
Strudwick, Jason --- D ------- 31 ------- 0.50

Lundqvist, Henrik ---- G ------- 24 ------- 4.25
TOTAL ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ 49.45

Expected signings:
Avery, Sean -------- C ------- 26 ------- 2.00 ** RFA
Hossa, Marcel ------- L ------- 24 ------- 0.75 ** RFA
TOTAL ------- ------ ------ ------ ------ 2.75

Expected Callups:
Staal, Marc --------- D ------- 19 ------- 0.85
Montoya, Al --------- G ------- 21 ------- 0.98
TOTAL ------- ------ ------ ------ ------ 1.83

TOTAL OF ABOVE: -------- ------ ------ 54.03
* 2.5 base plus 2 for 10 games and .8 for playoff incentives
** my guess

Based on this, even without Kaspar's $3M, it seems clear the Rangers will HAVE to move some salary before the season starts. Avery's money will take it right to the cap. That's not a good way to start the season.

This year is really goona be a WYSIWYG year with the rangers as there isnt gonna be room for any big deals near the deadline. Imho the Gomez deal is gonna hurt down the road.

2,5-3 million would have been a good deal, considering what the likes of Ryan Miller makes.

4-4,5 is not a good deal and Lundqvist does not deserve that much yet.

If he gets 4,5 then he is getting paid twice as much as Miller and he is NOT twice as good.

Its funny how a lot of outside fans are worried about the cap like if the team goes over it theyll fall down a big cliff and lose all their players.

So what?

Even if they start the season over they'll get fined what? Pocket change for Cablevision?

Anyway its not like they are going to be over anyway because theyve done a good job.

Next year itll go up again and a lot of contracts will be off. Fantastic Job done IMO.

The Gomez deal was a bit much, but once they all hit the ice and play no one is going to be thinking about cap space.

Cant agree if you don't think Hank is worth 4.25 million..

And you cant compare Millers contract. If he was in the same RFA situation after last years performance he get about the same, maybe a little less. In New York City, where they are handing out huge contracts in the first place and youve proven youre a winner here.

Its not just his play either. Lundqvist is an attraction at the Garden. He puts fannies in the seats. Miller is just a squirt goalie compared to Lundqvists image. He has tremendous marketablity and don't think for one second Meehan didn't mention that in the contract talks.

Tex
Take the Kaspar contract out as well as the bonuses for Shanny as they are NOT assessed against the Cap.

It's my understanding that bonuses for players 35+ and sign for 1 year do not have their bonuses count against the teams salary.

51,699-2.8 for Shanny and 3 million for Kaspar = 45,900 leaving the Rangers 4 million for Avery and Hossa

more than enough room

How does going over the cap even work? Are you fined and the surplus salary goes against next years cap?

sorry, but if you don't think that what Lundqvist has done over the last 2 years is not worth the contract he got, then you are mistaken.

Two straight years with 30+ wins (someting Richter never did), two straight Vezina nominations pretty much placing him square in the top 10 in the league if not the top 5.

4.5 is going to seem like a bargain had he signed with another team. Yes we have Montoya and as nicely as he is progressing, he's not nearly as proven as Henrik is.

I'm a happy camper today.

Sather hasn't worked this hard in 20 years. They are really cutting it close with these signings

Quote:
Lundqvist's deal, plus the contracts that Sean Avery and Marcel Hossa will get either through arbitration or settlement will take the Rangers right up against the $50.3-million salary cap. That means no Sheldon Souray unless Glen Sather can swing a couple of salary-shedding deals.

Matt Cullen and Paul Mara are the obvious candidates to be moved under such circumstances. But it won't be easy. They'd pretty much have to be traded in deals that brought back next to nothing in terms of salary commitment for this season in order for there to be enough cap space to sign Souray

Thank God.

Sather can worry about the cap. I hope we pick up Avery and Hossa, but the necessities are covered at least.

If you are serious -

#1. Shanahan told everyone before July 1st that he only wanted to play for the rangers, killing his negotiation position.
#2. He waited until the Rangers were finished with their massive UFA signings and stayed out of the way.
#3. He made 4 million last year and is a sure fire first ballot hall of famer whos won stanley cups and is an integral part to any locker room.
#4. How is taking a 2.5 mil, incentive laid contract being greedy?
#5. He stuck to his word, something other players wouldnt do in his position seeing the cap issue the Rangers (luckily I might add) found themselves in.

If thats not understanding a teams cap issues i dont know what is.

I dont get how Shanny's being greedy...
I think this is misunderstanding - Shanny is making 4.5M$ a year, plus it can be 800k more(it depends on playoff performance) = 5,3M$
Compare it to last year salary - 4M$.
