Max Afinogenov scores 1st career hat trick

Buffalo's Max Afinogenov has 3 goals in tonight's Sabres/Caps game, all three against Washington's Maxime Ouellet. The first was on a breakaway, he deked Ouellet, stopped on a dime and backhanded it in. The second was a quick slap shot from the point off a turnover that beat Ouellet shortside. The third goal was another breakaway, coming in off the right side, and jamming in the rebound of the original shot.

Any thoughts on Max? Is this the breakout to the next level of his game?

BTW, it's 6-1 Sabres after 2...

Maybe it is time for Maxim to wake up. I think he absolutely adores playing with Derek Roy. What a rocket Maxim had for his 2nd goal! Satan rifles two home. I think maybe this is Buffalo's wake up call as an entire team.

How serious is Bondra's groin problem? I didn't even realize he'd injured himself until tonight when I was looking through the ESPN boxscores for the reason why he wasn't in the lineup.

Max and Miro have awoken from the slumber. Buffalo isn't slowing down at all tonight.

That is a terrible move to leave a young goalie with such a great future like Oulette out there to such an onslaught.

I just heard on TSN that the last time that Buffalo had two players score a hat trick in the same game was New Years Eve, 11 years ago.

WEIRD

Nice to know Buffalo isn't the only team which mishandles situations like this.

It is eerie about the hat trick factoid....

Well, the second one wasn't as much of a clearcut break as the second, but Max had a step on the defenseman on that one.

It was a one on one against Gonchar so yeah, pretty much a breakaway

I didn't agree with the decision to leave Ouellet in there the entire game. I was yelling for Hanlon to pull him out in the 2nd period! I dunno . . . Hanlon is a former goalie himself. Maybe he knows better?

No idea. They didn't really mention too much about it. The first time I heard about it was about a minute before the game. I'm pretty sure I remember when it happened though, during the B's game. Hopefully its minor.

I don't know for sure, but I believe Max had a hat trick a couple of years ago, It was against the (i think) Leafs on Halloween, I know that much...if so, that's 2nd career HT.

It gets more Erie.....I mean Eerie.....

The last time it happened, 12.31.1992, Yuri Khymlev was one of the participants......Yuri was traded to St. Louis in the mid 90s and part of the return was a 3rd round pick in 1997.....a guy named Max Afinogenov.

I second the notion that the Caps just totally blow. Mike Grier blows times 50. Another thing I have a problem with is the lack of fighting now that Hanlon has become coach. What a fricken pu$$y coach. Tonight Peat should have dropped the gloves a couple of times, but no. Hanlon has ordered his players not to get involved into prearranged fights (like saying at the faceoff "Let's Go"), you have to fight as a result of actions on the ice. Hanlon puts Peat out there against Afinogenov, no one to fight with on that line. So Whitfield ends up dropping the gloves instead, holds his own, but he shouldn't be the guy fighting. You have enforcers for a reason. Obviously Hanlon doesn't understand when or how to utilize them. The caps are not only the worst team in the league, they are the softest, and they have the biggest pu$$y behind the bench.

I think I remember that came. As a Leafs fan, those thrashings (including an 8-0 one back in 2000) leave a bitter taste in the mouth... Buffalo was a realy underrated team back then...

Saw on Empire that Alex Mogilny was the other player who turned the trick that night.

lol i know the way you feel, dave lewis is a huge puss and sometimes I wonder why he's a coach...Im always yelling at the TV for his bogus line combos and pointless gaze across the ice...looks like someone so stoned they stay motionless and just watch the world around them...o well, we're winning games and the caps aren't

fat chance on that one. Peaceful Glen will order them to not play with any heart, emotion, and especially no physical play.

Satan & Max trick Caps

Lost in all the hubbub over the two hat tricks is the fact that Andrew Peters scored his first NHL goal!

Wish he could have gotten the Gordie Howe hat trick: a goal, an assist, and a fight!

I figured it was probably LaFontaine and Mogilny from the same 92-93 season.
