Phaneuf is one of the highest scoring Dmen of all time after his first 2 seasons and is every bit as much an imposing physical force as Weber......... but you don't think he can top out above Adam Foote, but Weber can?!?!? That is rediculous logic.

Phanuef is the better highlight reel, Weber is the better defenseman.

hmm very hard decision, I love Weber, but have to go with Phaneuf. I'd love to have either of them on my team.

The fact that this thread is only 60/40 is rediculous.

Phaneuf 8 days in a week.

Weber isn't as "noticable", but damn can he play. Phaneuf may be just as good, but Weber has that hockey sense that Phaneuf has yet to get. Right now, give me Weber.

I would take Phaneuf because I think he has a better upside. But right now, I think tgat Weber is a little bit better with his defense... Who knows which one will have the best career...

Posts like these truly make me believe that you guys have never watched Weber play more than once in the NHL. Which really wouldn't be that far of a stretch being that you are both Eastern Conference fans.

It's definitely close. Both are physical guys, Phaneuf is better offensively while I'd take Weber on the defensive side.

Phaneuf is a phenomenal young defenseman. I love his game. Same with Weber.

That said, I think Phaneuf is a bit overrated by many on these boards. Yes, I've seen him play quite a bit, and he is phenomenal, but there are other impressive young defensemen that get ignored. Phaneuf probably makes the most noise with his hits and gets overrated a little because you hear about him constantly.

I think Weber plays a 'quieter' game so he is a bit underrated here.

I'm not picking because I don't know. I do know I'd love to have either on the Penguins.

Both great D and would love them both. It would depend on what my team need at the time. A little more O, Id take phaneuf. More D, Id take Weber.

Are you kidding me?

Let's face, most hockey fans(even the majority of the fans on this board) watch their team's games more than any other team - by a large margain generally too. Being that you are a Toronto fan - i'm assuming by the location and Maple Leaf avatar - that would make you a fan of a team in the Eastern Conference. Being that your Eastern Conference team played Nashville once last season, it's pretty a reasonable assumption that you didn't get a chance to watch a ton of Nashville games last season. And being that the one time your favorite team played Nashville Shea Weber didn't even play - really does nothing but further stregthen my argument(Weber was out for a 3 game stretch last season from Feb 4 - Feb 13th, which included the Feb 8th game against Toronto).

And being that Nashville wasn't a national TV favorite last season, that would mean that you would have had some type of package allowing you to watch Nashville play. Now i can't say that you didn't have some type of package, but i'm willing to bet(whether you admit to it or not) that you probably didn't watch to many Nashville games last season. And being that they only played 5 playoff games, which would have been easy to access on national tv, that's really not enough games to watch to make a statement like:

EDIT: I totally forgot to mention the fact that - being that you probably haven't seen Weber play much in the NHL, you're naturally going to pick the more well known, hyped player - who is without question Phaneuf.

This poll is incredible. There is nothing to suggest that Weber is better than Phaneuf right now. Maybe equal at best, but not better. Has Phaneuf bashing become a fad?

Um, I voted Weber, but lasted time I checked, CALGARY isn't in the East. And Toronto only played the Flames ONCE too...

Phaneuf has years of hype on Weber. Pierre McGuire can't walk across the street without screaming his name. That's why he says:

This is a really tough call. I say Webber by a hair.

Phaneuf is the sexier pick what with the cannon slap shot and huge open ice hits... but IMO as it stands right now, Webber is already top 5 shut-down D-Man in the league. He isn't a slouch offensively too.
