Boxing General Discussion Thread

The return of Arturo Gatti -vs- Alfonso Gomez.

Antonio Margarito -vs- (32-0-0) Paul Williams for the WBO Welterweight Title.

And also Kermit Cintron defends against Walter Mathysse.

I'll go with Gatti just cause I wanna see him win.

Paul Williams, and Cintron.

Pretty good night of boxing. Missed the Cintron fight. Gatti was blown out of there, glad he's finally retiring. Paul Williams was dominant, it's a shame it would have been a draw had Margarito won the last round.

I missed the Cintron fight also. I saw Gatti get annihilated.

I dont know.. I scored Williams/Margarito 117-111 for Williams.

I had it 9 rounds to 3 for Williams but had Margarito won that last round, it would have been a draw on two of the judges score cards.

Cintron BEAT Mathysse's ass. No joke, knocked the guy out as close to cold as you get without there being a serious injury.

I had the fight 116-112 for Williams. I thought the 4th round could have went either way, that and I think the 10th round I gave to Williams and Lederman gave it to Margarito, so I could reasonably see a draw, but Williams controlled rounds and Margarito controlled spurts.

Cintron is ready for a step up.

I scored it 116-112 for Williams over Margarito, Williams kept the pressure on while Margarito didn't do enough, good fight though.

Gatti, well what can you say about one of the true warriors in boxing. He probably took a bout 2-3 fights too many. I hope he stays retired and I will never forget the many wars I saw him go through, truly entertaining to watch as a fan. Thanks Gatti.

Mayweather is probably the best fight for Paul Williams. Wouldn't be the most entertaining fight but from a styles perspective, it's the match up I'd most like to see.

I'd probably say Mayweather wins in a UD. But you never know.. I dont want to underrate Paul that much. PBF is really good defensively.. Probably quicker than Williams too. And actually PBF might have more power.

I still wanna see Mayweather/Hatton or Mayweather/Cotto before that fight though.

p.s.

Is there an Official Boxing Thread? We dont need it stickied, but maybe someone should make one.

Boxing > MMA
There is an MMA thread, a wrasslin thread but no boxing thread. Can you re-title this thread and turn it into a general boxing thread? If not, I'll make a new thread next time I'm on.

I think Floyd would have an easier time with Cotto than Williams. I'd like to see Mayweather fight any of the top guys though, haven't been impressed with his selection of Gatti, Zab, Oscar.

Next saturday.. Bernard Hopkins v Winky Wright.

I think Winky is one of the most underrated fighters ever. He's awesome. Winky by decision.

Winky has been very underrated throughout his career but even worse, he's been labeled as a boring fighter. I've seen every Winky fight since the Vargas fight and he's been one of the better action fighters of his era - proving that you can box smartly and still put on a show.

I'll be pulling for Winky in this one but I think he's lost more in the last two years than Bernard has but Wright is a vastly superior fighter to Hopkins. Bernard always has been a very limited fighter but excellent technically, the only thing Winky lacks is a big punch.

I don't know what to make of the weight they are fighting at. Ike Quartey was always a big strong Welter/Jr Middle and he looked like a midget against Wright. If Winky fights a very defensive fight, I see it going down as both Hopkins/Taylor fights with no real winner. If the weight gain isn't a big deal and he pressures Hopkins like he did Taylor, I think he could win easily.

Winky might've beat Vargas in that fight.. Maybe if he was as well known as he is today he would've won. But me being a Vargas fan I'm happy he didn't.

Vargas is gonna KO Mayorga, btw.

I thought Winky won the Vargas fight, but I thought Quartey beat Vargas as well.

Vargas vs Mayorga will lack the boxing. It will be a streetfight. Should be very entertaining...

RE: Winky vs. X...I like Winky by a 116-112 type unanimous decision. By enough to be called a close fight, but one that puts Bernard back into retirement. I hate to say it, because honestly, the guy was my favorite fighter ever, but this fight is all wrong for him. Bernard needs to fight a guy that pressures at a constant so he can sit back and counterpunch. This fight will be the same as the Taylor fights. Guy with very deceptive handspeed that will beat him to the punch, but not like with Taylor, the punches in this fight will be accurate, straight punches instead of wild, looping ones. Nobody will get hurt or cut, but Winky will win. If I wasn't convinced that Winky's chin isn't made of steel, it would be a little differently. Wright gets hit, it's no sweat off his back.

As a fighter like Hopkins gets older, he must rely on his experience and savyness in the ring. I can't discount Bernard for this but I think Wright will be too accurate and quick for Hopkins. That being said, 1 good left hook to the body and Wright is done so this should be an interesting fight.

I will. Teddy Atlas needs to be a commentator on the HBO fights. He's awesome.

HBO needs a new commentator, Merchant is shot and Kellerman isn't very good outside of a studio setting. Hopefully Bob Papa will take Lampleys full time spot soon, Papa is the best in the business. I'm not a big fan of Atlas but if he were put with Papa, he'd be okay. Papa used to keep him in line when they were both at ESPN but with a lesser play by play guy, Teddy tends to dominate the entire telecast, which is a bit annoying for me.

The first fight on WNF tonight was the best one.

Dat Nguyen beats Castulo Gonzalez. I had it 77-76.

In the main event Mike Oliver stays undefeated at 20-0, after beating a... bad Carvajal.

Yeah, the first fight was a good action fight. I had it a draw. I fell asleep after a couple rounds of the main event.
