If my hunch proves correct, it will be terrible for the Ducks, since they will have definitely gotten worse by replacing Pronger with Schneider.

Hm.. well if Nieds comes back it will probably only be for one season, two tops. so we trade our 2nd best defensemen, not to mention probably the third best defensemen in the league, away? I don't think so.

You don't think world class teemu would set an example for the team and take league minimum.

No, I don't, nor would his union-card-bearing teammates thank him for setting the bar for a 90-point scorer so low.

How else would they get down to budget then? Trade away 4-5 players, completely gutting the team?

And remember if we're desperate we can still deal Bertuzzi or Schneider. An NTC only means the player has to agree to be traded, which is a barrier but not nearly as much as people seem to think.
Hate to get into this because it's clear that my opinion probably isn't wanted, but the guy signed a contract to play in Anaheim. Is it worth it to trade a guy that you just signed? Is it really worth it to trade a player that signed a contract 2 or 3 months ago (whenever the decision is made) to play in Anaheim. Hardly.

The players would love to see it, they'd know what destination to mark off the list come their free agent time. It's bad for business, bad for PR around the league from the players. Ain't gonna happen that way. You sign somewhere, just get situated and the team trades you?

Also, I think it's quite clear that ownership is fine with spending over the budget. Otherwise they would have never authorized the Bertuzzi or Schneider signings without Burke knowing what was going to happen with Teemu and Neidermayer. They know what winning teams bring to the table.

Niedermayer still mulling it over

According to his agent. Says he'll probably make his final decision prior to training camp.

If neidermayer plays this year

What will your cap situation be if say Scott wants to play and selanne wants to play in anaheim?

can you keep both? just scott? neither?

What are your thoughts?

I doubt both will however some room will have to be made if they do. I suspect guys like Marchant and Bryzgalov (who will be moved anyway) will be among the first to go. Assuming Hillier doesn't play the role of backup because of his cap hit and assuming I did the math correctly (a big if) that would leave about 8.5M for Selanne, Penner, a 7th defenseman and a backup goalie with a Marchant deal factored in.

so far with scotty we have some 2.6M left in cap room
if both will stay we have to clear some money in bryzgalov and marchant I think

Kunitz-McDonald-Selanne
Bertuzzi/Penner-Getzlaf-Perry
Niedermayer-Pahlsson-Moen
Bertuzzi/Penner-Carter-May

Res: Miller, Parros

Niedermayer - Beachimen
O'Donnell - Pronger
Schenider - Huskins

Res: Hnidy

Giguere
Hiller

I'm guessing thats how it would play out should they both come back, though I didn't crunch any numbers. The Schneider signing can be justified regarless, but Bertuzzi doesn't seem to fit at all if Selanne returns, unless you subscribe to the belief that he should be skating in Kunitz' spot.

Hell of a line up on paper though. Can't see it happening, but you never know I guess.

Well, if he comes back we'll have a ridiculous amount of wealth on the blueline.

Kings fan's opinions are fine as long as they provide actual content. Or if they aren't just plain dumb.

Normally trading a newly signed player would be bad for future FA prospects, but I don't think our doing it would affect us as much. Players and agents (now called plagents) will take the circumstances into account. Schneider and Bertuzzi were signed as replacements for Selanne and Niedermayer. Plagents will see that salary had to be moved to fit these two franchise players. And it's also good for the player too because they'd certainly out on a first line spot to Selanne and Nieds. It's not like we signed a player just to trade him for assets. And the contracts were only 2 years, it's not as bad as trading someone we'd committed to for the long term. And I'm sure it would only happen as a last resort, if we couldn't move other people. It's certainly way better than waiving a vet and placing him in the minors.

Anyways I seriously doubt that both Selanne and Niedermayer come back, so this is probably pointless speculation.

I pretty much agree with your line combinations, but why move Bryzgalov to free up capspace when Hiller makes twice as much? Hiller's caphit is $3.200 with the big club, so he's pretty much stuck in Portland if Giguere doesn't get injured.

If Scotty and Teemu returns, Marchant and Bryzgalov would be dealt IMO. Selanne would have to take a paycut to keep Penner on the team, if we don't trade O'Donnell.
We would be looking for a cheap backup like Burke or Aubin and a cheap defensive center that can replace Marchant in PK. Bring Mikael Holmqvist back maybe? A solid skater, and forechecker and has good hands. Can also throw his gloves if neccesary...
