Rethinking JOVO

With Cullens departure, along with his cap hit, do the Rangers have the room to make a deal of Malik or Mara to the Yotes for the Jovo?

These rumors persist.

I dont doubt it's been disscussed. Not sure how I would feel about it. Havent seen much of Jovo for a while. His contract is rather....LARGE

Does he answer the veteren impact player quest?

Maybe I am missing it, but where are these rumors coming from exactly? Eklund? Other boards on HF? I have yet to see a credible source say that the Rangers have an interest in Jovanovski. I know last summer his contract was too rich for the Rangers blood, what would change that this summer?

Cycle - sorry if I sound like a jerk in my response, but I am honestly just trying to figure out how it all started.

No Jovo, please, no Jovo. I'm not committing that money over those years to a guy who hasn't been healthy for five years.

Jovocop is a good player, but as you mentioned before, his contract is just way too massive for the team to take on (I believe 6.5 mil over 4-5 more years)

He's Phoenix's problem now, not ours

Even if they traded Mara, the space is tight to get all of Jovo, Avery, and Hossa signed.

Even if they didn't sign Hossa, it'd be tight.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if Phoenix is dangling Jovo hard, hoping the Rangers will bite, and that's where these rumors are coming from.

I don't think Jovo is the answer just from a player POV. I'd rather a Teppo Numminen to fill in for a "veteran leader" dman. Too bad he already resigned with Buffalo.

From a salary POV, I don't know what sort of miracle you'd have to pull off to get that to fit under cap. Then you have more problems such as we have to give Henke a bonzo-big salary next summer. Cherepanov is gonna get rookie max probably. It might sound nice, former 1st overall Ed Jovonoski but you're really shooting yourself in the foot taking on his albatross proportioned salary. I remember how ridiculous it looked when the Yotes signed him. As the first post-lockout signing, made me think UFA ain't changed a damned bit!

From an asset management POV, is he really worth giving up all those players? I think Mara + Malik is worth more than Jovo from a player value POV. Jovo qualifies as a #2B defenseman. He's big and tough but he's hardly the shining stalwart defensive backbone you'd need to put you over the top. Career -29. His best +/- season was with Malik however

If he was signed at $4.5M for 3 more years, I could see us being able to take that. $6.5M for 4 more? No thanks!

I'll pass on Jovo also. I'd rather see Staal, Barranka, etc considered for spots on the Rangers blue line. If we do make a trade, please can it be for a d-man under 26, hehe.

Please get Jovanovski. After all, the Rangers have unlimited money right?

That would waste the cap space we just cleared up by getting rid of Cullen, and push us up dangerously close to the cap again, probably over it.

Trading for Jovonovski would take us back to the days of the old Rangers (late 90's early 00's) where we took alot of big ticket players who were past their best and injury prone. When was the last time Jovo was both completley healthy and in top form???

Remember bringing in players like (god, tho i like him) Lindros?? thank god there was no cap then!!!

We dont need Jovo. All we need now is a 3rd line center to come in and COMPETE at camp and hope Dubinsky or Anisimov are ready to compete with this guy to create competition...

The only other guy I'd want to have a long-term contract on this roster is Henrik Lundqvist. Jovo will most likely be hurt(again), and I'm sure the masses on this board will be livid if this were to happen. Just say NO!
