After the Peter Chiarelli incident with Boston/Ottawa, I believe that the NHL eliminated the compensation requirement.

Chiarelli was working with the Senators as an Assistant GM I believe and then the Bruins offered to hire him to their GM position. In order to do that, the Bruins had to give the Senators their 2nd round pick. Plus, Chiarelli had to stay at Ottawa's table while the draft was going on. It just wasn't a positive thing and so, they banned compensation.

I never liked compensation. If a person wants to sign with another organization, he should be allowed to do so without risking a penalty to his current team.

If a guys under contract however... I like the idea of someone being able to leave only if A. Contract expires. B. It's considered a HIGHER position... not just salary OR C. Team's permission to leave.

Techincally it was a higher position for Maloney. He went from Assistant GM to Head GM at Pheonix. So if you go by your intended rules, he was more than able to sign for them.

I think Maloney did a very good job in NY but he couldnt see Sather leaving so his career path was essentially blocked. Good luck to the guy for showing ambition - he'll do well in Pheonix, im just glad he's in the West!!!

We got something. We got the joy of knowing Maloney wont ever try and dump Jovocop on us just because he has so much ranger blood in him.

There rarely is compensation when someone leaves for a better position. It is poor etiquette and relations to block someone’s career path. This is assuming the proper vehicles are utilized to contact and interview the individual.

More often than not, compensation is awarded as the result of some sort of tampering. If a club interviews someone under contract without permission, etc., then the activity is inappropriate and compensation is awarded.

NYR should not receive anything for Maloney.

I can't remember... did we get anything from St. Louis when they went after Mike Keenan?

Exactly. That's why I don't understand why people are complaining.
