We're at $48m with Nieds and without Teemu and Penner. Penner takes us up too $52m, and if you dump Marchant you'll go to about $49.5. We can keep Nieds, Penner and Teemu (on min only) if we dump Marchant's contract.

My point was: there is no problem if Nieds is retiring, so does that mean Burke (admitting TSN is right and he is indeed looking to make a trade) thinks there is a good chance to see his captain coming back?

Here's a thought. If we want to trade someone for cap space, and Buffalo wants a center to take faceoffs... Marchant to the Sabres? Two GMs hurt by Lowe helping each other out? They have plenty of cap space thanks to Drury and Briere. Seems like a decent fit. Maybe for a 3rd (with say Carter moving into Marchant's spot)? The only problem is we don't have much center depth, and it'd mean bye-bye to giving the 4th line much icetime.

that doesn't matter Anaheim's self imposed cap is south of $45M..plus they want breathing room heading into the trade deadline and for injuries/callups.

I'm certain I read that the Sabres plan to fill their holes from within.

Pre-Bertuzzi he would have matched. Post Bertuzzi, probably not but rest assured that the rest of the league's GM's and Bettman would love to see the Ducks match. One of them will probably step up and make a deal that will allow Burke to match.......unless he has decided that he did not want to. Either way, Penner has caused the expectations of his performance to go way up. I wonder if he is up to the task. I recall Brad may taking over his spot on Getzlaf's line during the playoffs. Interesting theater.

Marchant's value is far from 3rd, I would be surprised to see anything but "future considerations" (GM speak for bag of pucks) coming back if any team trades for him.

Should we change the title to "Did Burke match?"

Don't assume. There's nothing that says it has to be reported to the media the second Burke decides to match (if he did match). That there's no news yet doesn't mean anything.

You're probably right. If he was going to match he would've done so ASAP and made a statement.

I believe he has let Penner go.

He had to talk to the owners. So even if he did/does match it wasn't something he could do asap (he was out of town at the time of the offer sheet being done).

If it's true that Burke matching depends on a trade, then it certainly could go right down to the deadline like this.

Looks like no match.

Good move by the Ducks - we don't need a five year albatross.
LOL - Lowe

Is it official? Or are they just saying that assuming since they haven't heard anything that Burke has decided to let the deadline pass and Dustin go?

That's the right move. Those picks will be worth something with the Oilers being... the Oilers, and they've just invested a mean chunk in a completely unproven player.

Good job, Burke.

Nothing official that I've seen.

My wife met him today. I tried to get her to pry and get some details. She's not that bold though.

Both teams will hold pressers today.
I guess that will make it more "official".

Even if Burke does match, won't Penner's new salary hit the cap next year? Doesn't Penner have to play out his original contract first? IF so and Nied's does come back, I doubt he'll play for more then another year....Am I wrong about this whole thing?
