Just mentioned on WRG550 that the Sabres have announced it is a 6 year deal.

BUFFALO SABRES AGREE TO TERMS WITH DEREK ROY

BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 27, 2007) --- Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have agreed to terms on a six-year deal with restricted free agent center Derek Roy. Terms were not disclosed. Roy was scheduled for NHL arbitration today in Toronto.

“Derek is a solid young player who will only continue to improve,” said Regier. “He will play an increased role for our club, and we look forward to having such a quality player in our organization for many years to come.”

Roy, 24, was fifth on the Sabres in scoring last season, posting career highs in points (63), goals (21) and assists (42) in 75 games. Roy was second on the Sabres and tied for fourth in the NHL with a plus/minus of +37. Fifteen of Roy’s 21 goals came in the second half of the season, as he missed seven games in the first half with a hand injury.

The native of Ottawa, Ontario, tied his career high with four points (1+3) against Montreal on March 2, and collected 11 points (4+7) in a career-best six-game point streak from Feb. 17-Mar. 2. Roy also had seven points (2+5) in Buffalo’s 16 postseason contests.

Roy, Buffalo’s second-round selection (32nd overall) in the 2001 Entry Draft, had a stellar four-year career with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League where he scored 335 points (147+188) in 242 games. In 2003 Roy captained the Rangers to a Memorial Cup title, and was named tournament MVP. Roy also won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2003 World Junior Championships.

Most likely exactly what it will be.

EDIT: TSN.ca confirms those numbers.

6yrs $24 sounds about right to me. Looks like the Sabres have warmed up to long term deals.

Same. I would be expecting $4 million at least if it's a deal as long as that. Roy is entering his prime and he is about to get a shot at being a #1 centre.

Another 20 goal scorer nabbing $4 mill a year. We had a lockout for this?

He got 63 points in 75 games and he is giving up a number of UFA years.

Roy isn't just a 20 goal scorer. Hes a 20 goal scorer, 60 point getter and +37 on the ice. He's also just entering his prime which makes it all the much better when their dealing with the losses of Drury and Briere(He plays C).

He may have played on the 3rd line but an ATOI of over 18 minutes doesn't sound like he was being starved of playing time. He had the forth highest ATOI of Buffalo's forwards. You are right that he will get more but not a lot more, the 1st unit PP will improve his stats however.

He hurt his hand at the beginning of the season and the injury affected his play for a while after that. After the all star break he was a point per game player. In that span he scored 12 goals in 33 games which is a 30 goal/season pace.

Could this deal be used as a comparative for the arbitration of Ryder?

I meant "wow" as in "I can't believe this guy is pulling out the cliched 'why did we have a lockout?' comment."

This takes up 4 UFA years. Great deal for Vanek's centerman.

A goal-scoring winger vs a playmaking center? Wouldn't think so.

Plus, I'm not sure if you can cite long-term deals like this where a player gives up UFA years in arbitration.

Thanks. You're right, we just can't compare these two players. As a Habs fan, I'm wondering how Ryder's - 25 will influence his arbitration award.

As for Roy, great news for Sabres fans. How do you guys see this player in 2-3 years?

Hopefully, a well-rounded #2 center. I'm not sure he has what it takes to be a #1, but he's very solid defensively, a great leader, and will prolly hit 80 points soon. Think a poor man's Doug Gilmour.

If he keeps his production at 60+ points (hopefully around 70) and continues to improve defensively (no reason why he shouldn't), he'll be very, very good value for money.
