It depends on who you ask. Some people here probably feel that it is an automatic. Personally, I don't. If Burke feels that Penner is, or will be, worth that kind of money, and Niedermayer stays, I would expect Burke to match the offer. Yes, it puts the team over the cap. No, it's not that big a deal. He can easily move one or two players and drop the team right back below the cap.

I really don't think the decision by Niedermayer has a lot to do with this, though some people disagree. The impact Niedermayer's decision has, in my eyes, is marginal. In fact, the real impact from Scotty, IMO, is whether or not he'd finish out his contract or just one season. Obviously that would have an impact on Getzlaf and Perry next season. This has more to do with Penner's worth, and the money that Getzlaf and Perry will command next season when they are RFA.

My prediction is Burke matches and then goes off on Lowe.

Either way, I would suggest that any media carrying it live go on a 7 second delay

Oh man this can go good or it can go bad. My guess is that it's about Scotty and how he will finish out his contract

If you give 5 more predictions or guesses, one of them is bound to be right

It looks like it's just for the press and it's a conference call so I doubt it is somewhere on the net.

If it is something important, you can be sure TSN will report it soon enough.

Also, that means big Pens will indeed be back, although it won't be official for quite some time, I imagine. After going after his RFA, there's no way Burke is going to do KLowe a favor and make it known right away. If he waits, Lowe's money is tied up for quite some time.
By 'quite some time' you mean within the next 5 days? Because he (Burke) has 1 week from the date of the contract to accept it or take the compensatory picks...

I have two guesses that I don't think have been suggested yet:

1.Introducing Bertuzzi and Schneider to the Anaheim media. It hasn't been done yet, I don't believe, and everyone else seems to have done it, so, why not us? I don't think we've had a high-profile presser in Anaheim for quite some time. It also explains why this hasn't been really picked up/no one knows why it's happening.

2.Introducing new jerseys and/or logo. I don't think the date when this happens has been announced, and, it makes sense. I imagine many teams will call a presser to announce this type of thing, and, it also explains why this hasn't been picked up by a major media outlet.

I agree...

but why not make it a huge press conference where they introduce Schnieder and Bertuzzi but also sign Selanne and Neidermeyer announces he's playing one more season... have them all wearing the new jerseys and logos as well... Make it an overloaded conference...

According to Wildcat, they're gonna discuss what's happened in the last 24-48 hours. Odd, the Penner signing happened 24 hours ago, why go a day before that? Also, if they're not announcing whether they'll match or not, why call a presser just to discuss it? I think there's something more going on...

Burke is calling the conference to officially announce a bounty on Kevin Lowe's head.

I am betting he will comment on Penner, and if Scott Niedermayer is retiring he deserves more than a goodbye conference call if you ask me.
