You're forgetting, this is Southern California... that's not happening.

Besides, this is a conference call from what I understand, not a physical presser with the press all assembled.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Burke will likely wait until the last moment possible to announce his decision, as he's not likely interested in doing KLowe any favors right now, and, making a quick decision does just that.

AM 830, but that's a Spanish language channel whenever the Ducks aren't broadcasting, I believe.

Edit: nevermind, it appears they've switched over to all English programming now.

I don't get it. The team is having a press conference but no one in the press is picking this up?

It's a teleconference (hence...over a telephone). If they needed tv coverage...they would of called out a full blown news conference.

Anyone got anything on this call? This is from Kukla's Corner. All credit to him for this:

Quote:
Listening in on the Anaheim Ducks conference call live right now. GM Brian Burke has just stated, on the line from Penticton, BC, that
1. he will be consulting ownership on Sunday about what to do.
2. Kevin Lowe has made a “classless move, timing wise” doing this the weekend on the BC HOF announcements.
2. Burke has no problems with offer sheets, but that “for the second time this season, Edmonton has offered a grossly inflated offer sheet” on a player.

Over the phone? That's kind of a slap in the face to the player, don't you think?

No one is the press owns a telephone?
I think if there was a teleconference the day after an offersheet was made tsn, sportsnet or someone might think about calling in and reporting the news live. It was done after the Vanek offer sheet.

Update 8:27pm ET
Burke’s comment re. #3 (above) was that this was essentially a desperate act by a General Manager desperate to keep his job (regarding Lowe).

Burke also stated that he had no advance notice about this from Lowe. Asked by a reporter if he would’ve felt less annoyed with the situation if he’d heard from Lowe ahead of time, Burke suggested he would have appreciated that. Also, Burke recognizes that they were acutely vulnerable in this situation, not knowing the status of players.

Gyro, at least credit the content to the source. http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.ph..._announcement/

Update 8:32pm ET
Journalist asked what Burke was most surprised by in this situation. Burke pointed to the deal itself, suggesting the hockey media can make their own assessment.

Asked how good a player Dustin Penner really is, Burke said “I won’t comment on that,” for now. Burke says he’s not mostly irate because Lowe didn’t give him notice, but doesn’t really explain. The implication is that he’s mostly frustrated that the offer sheet itself is unreasonable.

Asked about Selanne and Niedermayer, he states that he is still not pressing them to make a decision about coming back to the team. He promised the the time to make their decision and isn’t going back on that.

Update 8:39pm ET
Burke says he can’t give a time frame about the Penner decision. He’s talking to ownership Sunday or Monday, but can’t anticipate anything for certain except that he recognizes he has till Thursday and won’t rush it for anyone else’s benefit.

Asking about how this may change his relationship with Kevin Lowe in the future, Burke declined to say any more than “we’ll see.”

When asked if the Ducks own offer to Penner was in the range of the Oilers’ offer sheet, Burke stated he wasn’t sure of particulars, but that it was nowhere near the Oilers’ offer.

END OF CONFERENCE.

Please note: This is my own on-the-fly summation of Burke’s comments in the press conference. We will make a transcription available with the exact content as soon as it becomes available.

So Burke called a Press Conference last thing on a Friday to announce....

"he's not happy with Kevin Lowe and he thinks the offer was too much"

Wow, that's borderline egomaniac behavior.

It doesn't take a genious to figure out offer sheets for fair value don't exist because the players wouldn't sign them, they know they can get a fair deal almost anywhere if their current team won't pay them, so whats the point in burning bridges by upsetting your current employer. It has to be percieved as more than would be fair to make it worth the hastle of going through the process

If he thinks it's too much it's simple take the picks and walk, otherwise **** and smile each time you walk by the cup displayed in your office.

I am glad that Burke is mad.

Time to make the Ducks even better.

If we have to dump salary, why not make someone in the Northwest division a sweetheart deal? LOL

You do realize that one of his jobs as GM is to help keep Anaheim fans informed, and in the process he gave his opinion of the situation. There is nothing wrong with that.

And that really couldn't wait until he'd made his decsion and included in a real press conference where he had something actually newsworthy to talk about?

Would it have made that much difference to voice his opions on Monday?

And don't get me wrong, I do respect Burke and hope he takes Bettman's job the second it becomes available because I think he would be great promoting the league and could really help things get back on track, but he needs to cut this kind of rubbish out.
