Le Journal confirms Habs after 2 veterans, including RH Center

The “Habs looking for a Right shooting Center” rumour has now been confirmed in today’s “Le Journal de Montreal”, in which Yvon Pedneault (who is the one who conducted the Gainey interview on RDS during the Dallas game) writes that the Habs are looking for not one, but 2 veterans, including a Right shooting Center, from outside the organization. Here’s my ad lib translation of the relevant portion of his text, which I got from the paper version of the paper (usually, Pedneault’s texts end up reproduced on the RDS site a day or 2 later):

”Gainey must now fill the holes. The GM confided in Dallas Wednesday night that he would need two more players, and that such players are not from within the organization. He is looking for two experienced players, including a Center shooting from the right side.”

What's wrong with the "speculation", is it not what this Board is there for, particularly when the so-called speculation is based on a media source?

The speculation is right from Gainey's mouth.

Could Jason Arnott be one of these guys?

He is big. He is a center. He is right handed. He is veterant...

Add to that the fact that Dallas isn't exactly doing well by their standard, and he might be available on the market. Plus, Gainey has some ties with the Stars' organization.

I'd like to see him here, but I wonder what it would cost to us..

When you think about it seriously, do we really have room for Jason Arnott right now? I agree, we do need a #2 center that can put up good numbers and also bring size and grit. But the problem is, with Koivu being an established #1 center with the Canadiens, and Ribeiro having his break-out year, and establishing himself as a very decent #2 center, would Arnott accept to play a 3rd liner role? I don't think so, especially on a team that's not even sure to participate to the playoffs year after year.

Add to that the fact that Perreault is also an offensive center that can not take defensive responsibilities, which means you need to use him on the top 2 lines to get decent results from him. It doesn't make sense, to me... unless one of these 3 guys is involved in the deal, which, once again, I highly doubt (Koivu and Ribeiro for obvious reasons, and Perreault for money reasons).

Do you think Jason Arnott is still valuable?
For how many years he can skate without looking like a “ McKay ”?
How doe$ he earn$?
What would be the cost? A prospect? Wich one?
Or someone from our roster but who? ????

So many question, oh I think I'm having a headache, 2 Tylenol, gloup!

He is making 3.85million this year and is 29 years old.

I don't know where he'd fit, but the fact is that we are already loaded up at center and I'd like to see us getting a winger.

Gainey, on the other hand, want a center, so I named one that fit the bill, but I really don't know what we would do with it, eh!

Loaded up? Where do you see that. Philly is loaded up at center. The only loaded up we have at center are smallish left handed centers. Out of all the centers in out whole organization, I dont think we have one who is over 6 feet. Although Ribs is i think 6 feet, he usually plays like hes 5, 5. Right now we have centers who are capable at doing a decent job but i do not see any of our centers being capable of bringing us over the top. Now, I don't think we will get a number one centerman but we will get a very good 2nd centerman to make a real 1, 2 punch. Sorry but Ribs is a decent 2nd centreman but us having him does not equal a stanley cup.

Im not even considering Perrault in this cause...Its Perrault.

What I meant is that we are loaded for the 1-2 punch spots as Koivu and Ribeiro are getting the job done and that Perreault could also play on the 2nd line if needed to.

What it meant is that we are, IMO, more in a need of scoring wingers that we are needing centers.

You don't win by "getting the job done". You win by beating them and beating them handily. Why do you think all the great teams are so great. Its because they had a very high standard of excellence for their performance. You can't settle on just "getting the job done"

Do we look like a team that will be first in the East this year or the next season? No, because we are far from being one. The only thing we can hope to do right now is compete and... get the job done. We can compete for a playoff spot, and you get in the playoffs by.... getting the freakin' job done.

Top teams like the Flyers and the Avalanches can outright dominate because they are so f'ing loaded up even for top teams. But this is another thing, absolutly.

What I mean is: we are relatively loaded up at center.

Relatively to the kind of team we have on the ice. Relatively to the position we have in the standings. Not in relation with the top teams in the league, because we are FAR from competing with them.

well, if he were taller, less expensive, didn't suck and was right-handed, then I would say Stu Barnes. Next up would be Primeau, but I think he shoots left too; ditto for Brind'amour (who makes 5 million per year: ouch). So, I can think of no one. But I am ready to be surprised

I can only seee only one cheap, available, veteran right shooting center that can help the Habs: Ian Laperrière.

We have Begin , we don't Ian.

Arnott would be perfect.

Rivet,Perreault for Arnott.

Major shakeup needs to happen in Big D

Seriously Arnott is what we need , big center , right handed , play physical , can score goal . I would pay the price to acquire him , he can still play 3 , 4 years .

Are you kidding?! We could get Bertuzzi for Sundstrom and a second-round pick right now. He is very unpopular in Vancoolver.

I don't think Rivet and Perreault would interest Dallas for Arnott.
both are overpaid and don't bring much.

everybody wants Arnott but no one wants to give anything valuable.

What about : Hainsey/Hossa/Perreault and a 2nd round pick in 2004 for Arnott ???

I think it could be interesting for Dallas imo.
