To keep the Rangers under the cap.
Granted it was actually a very big contract for him, im not gonna get into all the home discounting crap - but his salary counts as 2.5 for this season with bonuses of 2.8 slated onto next years cap if need be. It gives the Rangers flexibility.
If you are thinking why don't they do that for every player, you can't.
You can only give performance bonuses for certain players - rookies, players over 35, guys who've been injured, etc.
There are stipulations.
So Shannys taking a risk with the 2.8 but not really.
