From my understanding you can't sign a contract extension when you are on your entry level deal yet Crosby has only played for two years so technically he should still be on his entry level deal.

Why is it possible for Crosby to negotiate an extension but not Getzlaf or Perry?

The league changed the Rules to allow teams to talk extension after 2 years of the 3 years entry contract are up.

Cant see any reason why you wouldnt be able to talk extension with Getzlaf

In Burke's world, he prefers to spend the budget on UFA and not his talented younger players whom he hopes to pay much less than the market value. It must make a serious statement to Getzlaf to see where the teams resources are going.

Do you have some kind of link for this? I expected that there was some kind of rule change or amendment, and now that you mention it kind of remember hearing something about that too. Because it seems like the CBA prohibits extensions off of the entry level contract.

Found a thread from here that has something on it........

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=343981

The NHL and NHLPA quietly amended the CBA last week, allowing clubs to extend entry-level players on the same basis they extend any other player in the last year of a contract, meaning they don't have to wait for the deal to expire. In the case of the Penguins, it means they can start extension talks with Sidney Crosby this July instead of waiting to 2008.

From what I read on the forums, it was because entry contracts signed with the old cba can not be extended, only new contracts can.

To add to the discussion, it's still possible that we can't sign Getzlaf to an extension. We have to have cap room to include the extension as well (kind of). I didn't bother to try to fully understand it, but it seems like we have to have the cap room to add his extension salary (after subtracting all expiring contracts, including his).

As is we don't have much cap room, and the contracts expiring are Getzlaf, Perry, Bryz, and Kunitz. That about 3.5 million in expiring contracts.

So if we go near the cap, we will be limited in how much we can offer to extend Getzlaf and Perry.

It's in Getz's best interest to wait anyway. He has yet to post a 60 point season. He's getting to be a bit overrated around here.

Andy Mac was awarded 3.33 per after an 85-point season. Getz will get paid, but it certainly won't be the 7-8 mil that's been thrown around here lately.

Nor should it be, obviously. Penner should be making 2m, Getzlaf 4m, and Perry can sit somewhere in between.

With what Parise got today I could see Getz getting 4-5 mil next season if he has a big year. (80-90 points)

But then it helps out Brian Burke next summer when he has to iron out contracts for Getzlaf and Perry. He can use Parise as a comparable all three being draft picks from 03. Personally, I'm glad Brian Burke is waiting till the last minute to make a decision. Penner's contract will not affect the players under arbitration and it will help out the Ducks next summer.

Getzlaf is the reason why I think Burke will not match Penner's offer. If he matches he will be in a vulnerable position against an offer sheet next year. And whatever Ducks cap situation is, I would really like the Wings to offer close to 6 mil offer sheet to Getzlaf (45m over 7 years?)... I am wondering, would you guys consider trading Getzlaf for Zetterberg? We could sign Getzlaf to 8 year 45m extension, and you would have a more cap friendly contract?

Meh, the Devils don't make good comparables for anything. Brodeur, the best goalie in the world making 5.2 million? Gionta, a former 48 goal scorer, making 4 million? Alexander Mogilny, a broken down player who only played 37 games in 04 getting 3.5 million?

Those salaries just don't compare anywhere around the league.

I wouldn't say that getzlaf can't get 7M - not from burke
but if there is someone depressed as lowe is now, he will get that kind of offer sheet

I'm not saying he can't get it either. I'm saying he shouldn't.

I know...I loved it for that fact also...Parise's deal also makes Penner's offer sheet all the more absurd.
