Lang to Det

A lot of sites have already posted that the wings are "heavily scouting" Robert Lang, they have already dispatched a few scouts to some of the Capitals game to just focus on him....

so with that said do you think Detroit will acquire him this year and what will they have to give up to get him...

I think it will look something like this-

From Detroit:2004 1st round pick,Jiri Hudler, another good pick or another good prospect
From Washington:Lang

thoughts,ideas?

One question, what line would Lang play on?

I doubt detroit is going to get him unless maybe at the deadline depends on the injuries Detroit has then.

I think if Detroit really wanted Lang. They would have to give up Jiri Fischer and maybe a 1st or a 2nd

but Detroit doesn't need a 1st line center because of Pavel Datsyuk
They acutally look pretty good down the middle
Draper, Williams, Yzerman, Zetterberg can play center they even have Devereaux.

heres a question I have never understood why are they scouting Lang?
What are they new? Lang been around for like 10 years. been an NHL regular since around 1998-99 with Pittsburgh
Also any time a paper reports theres are scouts at a game. There never seems to be a trade any way. I think they might be there just to watch a game, maybe report on any weak spots they see on a team.

naw Holland seems hell-bent to get this guy....he obviously sees something in him he likes

i could see Lang on any number of line combos probabley like this down the center

- Lang -
- Datsyuk -
- Yzerman -
- Draper -

and as for who plays on the open wing....it all depends on who exactly we give up

i like it, sorta.

i think if the wings gave up players like Woolley, that other young top 4 Dman then the caps would bite. MAYBE

Yeah. I mean, if the caps lost Lang, they'd probably stop being a Stanley Cup contender.

Seriously, though. If you're Washington, and if you realize you're not going anywhere this year, you'd better believe that you'll give up Lang. I mean, if they can find away to dump Jagr, they can afford to keep Lang and miss the playoffs.
But if they're saddled with Jagr, and they don't see playoff revenue, trading a guy like Lang or Gonchar or Bondra may become a neccessity.

Totally agree. No matter how good Lang is playing the Caps still aren't going anywhere and should trade him while his value is high for some prospects and/or picks. I can see Wahington holding on to Lang untill the deadline but most likely he won't be having the success he's having now and they get next to nothing for him.

Washington also can't have all of these high salaries with the uncerntainty of the CBA and what not. They can't have all of their money tied up in a few players.

Wouldn't it be the other way of thinking? He's having a great season, thus they could get a lot more for him.

Seems fair to me. If I were Washington, I'd as for Kronwall as the other prospect.

I wouldn't want to part ways with Kronwall, but it might come to that..

I totally agree with what you guys are saying....

I think my original proposal would do the trick with some one like Meech as the other prospect

From Detroit:2005 First Round Pick,Hudler,Meech
From Washington: Lang

I think it would be very unlikely that the Capitals would trade Lang.

Jagr is the guy that Caps might move, but they are not in a desperate financial position. In fact they stand to lose more money by fielding a 3 to 5 year loser in a rebuilding mode than they would by finding contracts that work for thier star players.
If the Caps do trade any of these players, other than Jagr, they will get players that are at minimum LIKELY to be of equal quality to the departing player in fairly short order.

is detroit willing to part with that kind of player?

i think it all comes down to is they are out of the playoffs or if Lang cools down then....

1.Detroit won't want him as much
2.Washington wont demand as much for him (something a little bit like my proposal)

If they are in the playoffs then....
1. Washington won't give him up
2. Washington would want a "game-ready" player(s)

as it looks half-way through the season washington isn't going to make the playoffs....so im thinking it'll be the first #2

Most that know the Capitals situation agree that they are two solid defensemen away from having a competitive team. They have 4 AHL defensemen on the ice everynight and an NHL team has no chance to compete on a consistant basis like that. Add two solid/average NHL defensemen to Witt and Gonchar and let Steve Eminger continue to grow and they are 5 deep and are in fine shape.

On the other hand....Trade off all the skill players and you destroy the team beyond the ability to compete at all in the near term. With Lang, Bondra, Zubrus and Gonchar the Caps power play could continue to produce with Jagr no longer on the team. Trade Gonchar, Lang and Bondra and there is no power play.

For each of those players that is traded you add a year to the rebuild.
how the contracts get worked out to fit under the Cap will be more complicated than what we are talking about, But I do not expect the Capitals to remove most of their top players, all of which are on their games this year, for players that will take years to develope and at best have a 50/50 chance to come close to replacing the quality of the departing players.

I firmly believe that trading Bondra, Gonchar and Lang for prospects and draft picks sentences the Caps to 5 years out of the playoffs. Leonsis loses more money with a 6 year run at the bottom of the NHL than he does trying to build around his developed players and the young players
already in the system

Detroit would never part with Fischer for a old foward.

they wouldnt part with him for Blake, or Bourque, they wont part with him for Lang.

add a pick, maybe 3rd and i think that's pretty even.

I know the rumors of scouts and what not at Caps games, but I just don't see the need from Detroit's perspective. They're decent up the middle as it is, and have a fairly packed group of forwards once everyone is healthy, which should be in another month or so. I just have a hard time seeing Detroit going out of their way to make room for a guy like Lang, especially at the price of several of the proposals here.

it shows the guys what the organization is willing to do to get them to win the cup....
it boosts moral (usually)...
and if (WHEN) the injury bug hits us during a hopefully long playoff run they will need more skilled people to step it up....

Lang has 9 goals and 13 assists in 50 some playoff games. Not what the Wings want.
