I don't have an "aversion" to stickied threads. What I object to, and only in the very slightest way, is when the stickies have no action. Then I question why they are still stickied. Go ahead and do it. I have no objection

Is rookie camp open to the public? I would assume it is...

makes sense to have it stickied until the end of camp

FWIW, IMO, the Caps are including info for both camps - rookie and the main training camp - in the releases so my vote is to keep this labeled for both

Viking - read the link provided to the Caps site earlier in the thread, it includes the info about what is and is not public and the schedule..."The Washington Capitals 2007 Rookie Camp and Training Camp at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va., will feature practices and scrimmages that are open to the public and free of charge, as well as special events including giveaways and specific days dedicated to heroes in the community and the Capitals’ young fans...."

Link to Caps announcement

sounds like Dan Kronick will be back for the rookie camp...

"Dan Kronick, who, by the way, is a tremendous golfer, participated in the Washington Caps Rookie camp this summer and will be heading back by invitation in an attempt to get a pro contract in September."

Huh. That's interesting. He's got good size, at least. That's another thing to keep an eye out for.

By my count, the Caps currently have 45 players under contract for '07-'08 (not counting Varlamov or Neuvirth at this point). Heading into the season, I'd think the front office would want to keep a spot or two open under the maximum limit just for future contingencies and flexibility purposes.

For those who were able to attend, what was his game like?

He'll win the award for the most resemblance to a gargoyle, heh. Sort of ill proportioned big guy (he looked overweight) that skating was somewhat suspect but knew how to use what he has like being in front of the net at the right time and throwing his weight around and the right time.

yeah, by my count, too

I was surprised to read that they invited him back - assuming that report is true - but most, if not all, the teams have UFA players at their rookie camps.

A big body to stand in the slot...plowed over a couple of goalies during the summer dev camp scrimmages, too. Skating was unimpressive watching him play during the dev camp and for SCSU a few times on tv earlier in the year.

I love that name. Kronick is a great hockey name. Good luck to him and his former teammate A. Gordon.

Kronick is horrendous skater.

But he has size and can bang in ugly goals in front.

I don't think he has a chance.

Mike Vogel responded to a question in the comment section of his blog...and in the response notes that the rookie camp is for players entering their 1st or 2nd pro seasons plus some prospects that may not be playing pro, of course.

Also, I have seen several articles about the Hitmen noting that Seabrook will attend camp along with Alzner. And a Knights article indicating Justin Taylor will be at camp. None of that is a surprise since they are CHL players, but since a roster won't be out until sometime next week according to the last update we heard, I thought I would post some updates. I typed up a list of CHL and first and second year pro players and it is a pretty lengthy list. Should be interesting to see the roster when they release it.

Nicklas Bäckström left Sweden today and you will likely see him play.

I think that's the number he was wearing in Europe.

finally

a few observations about the rookie camp roster

2 players from the summer dev camp invited back:

Jay Beagle - does not surprise me
Dan Kronick - as I already noted that invite did surprise me

the other free (non-Caps prospect) agent invite is Marty Guerin, Miami U, former Kings prospect (late round pick, unsigned became free agent)

2 players signed to Hershey contracts on the list:

Tommy Maxwell, played in the ECHL last season
Tyler Sloan, he was at the summer dev camp, but did not participat in any on ice drills or scrimmages; FWIW, I doubt he will be able to play in the scrimmage against the Philly prospects given his pro experience, based on previous prospect tourneys and a recent Vogel blog comment, prospects and 1st and 2nd yearpro prospects can participate...but glad to see he will be at the camp

no surprise that the free agent invites are forwards not d-men or goalies

observations about the main training camp roster:

After a quick review, looks like the non-Caps players listed on the main training camp roster right now are players signed to Hershey Bears contracts for the 2007-08 season.

Barney
Laing
McAllister
McNeill (Grant)
Potulny

and nice to see they included Arsene this year (for those that recall the 3 or 4 Caps contracted players that were not invited last year)

plus as noted in the release, Select rookies [rookie camp participants] will participate in training camp as well.

people commented on some others, too, but I think Beagle was the free agent forward at dev camp that received the most positive reviews/comments from the hf posters

link to Seabrook article about attending rookie camp

article about Battalion players headed to camps including Lynes

“In Luke’s case, he’s worked extremely hard on his fitness, and that shows he’s very serious about this season. de Gray and Pitton are always in good shape.”

The Plymouth site has an announcement about Neuvirth and other Whalers headed to NHL camps with a picture from a game against London last season, which also includes Justin Taylor in the pic.
