It hurts but MAF isn't looking super-wise as the #1 overall in this deep of a draft.

Hindsight I guess.

It's between Staal or Weber for me.

If he plays to his potential, who knows? Fleury is still a big question mark IMO, he can be spectacular one game then suck completely the next. He's still a young guy, so I think he mas more room to grow and become a solid #1 goalie

It's between Parise and Getzlaf for me. I just see these two having the best careers out of that list.

It was a toss up for me between vanek (who I think will be a perennial 40 goal scorer in this league), and phaneuf (who is the current d-man that reminds me of scott stevens more than any other current d-man)

I went with phaneuf since quality D is a rarity.

I doubt he would be considered "perennial" but ok.

I can't really make up my mind, but I have to say, the 2nd round of this draft is almost as good as the 1st round!

Agreed. My thoughts exactly.

Voted Weber but I think I underrate Staal because of this last season. If he bounces back there should be no doubts who's #1 quite soon.

The kid won over 40 games last year in his 1st full season.
That's good enough progress for me for a young goaltender.
Not everyone is Patrick Roy in thier first season.

It was hard to pick between Staal, Vanek, or Phaneuf. I'd go with Phaneuf simply because he's a yound defencemen who's already this good. Imagine what he can be in the next 5 years. Of course, the same could be said for Vanek and Staal, but their already 40 goal scorers and 50 is as high as their gonna go. ME PIKZ DEON FANOOF

Don't get me wrong I'm a huge Fleury fan and I'm happy with his progress. But he probably shouldn't have gone 1st overall in hindsight.

Was he the best player drafted that year? Probably not. But knowing what I know now, about how the following drafts would work out for the Pens...it was probably the right pick for them.

I think he got a lot of hype from his performance at the WJC in his draft year that shot him up the rankings. He should develop into a very solid goaltender...but their are some potential franchise players that were taken after him is all I'm saying

On my team? I'd love to have Nathan Horton with the Sedins.

Best player, period? That gets tougher. I think Vanek is the most talented out of the list. Staal is a franchise center. Phaneuf is a solid checking defender, and one of those guys that you build a team around. Weber is an exceptionally smart defensive guy who wins games.

Any of these guys are solid, soild picks, but I have to say the best player out of them all will probably be E. Staal.

a) The Pens really did not have complete freedom to take whomever they wanted at #1. Florida, who had Luongo got assurances that the Pens would trade Fleury before they traded down to three in exchange for trinkets and a bag of pucks.

b) had we taken Staal for instance, we almost assuredly would not have Malkin now (only a pt. separated us from Chicago and Staal certainly would have gotten us at least a point or two) and likely not Crosby either. Even had we gotten them we would have had even more salary cap issues, and sooner, with Staal, Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Esposito all clogging up the center/forward positions and all due big pay days soon.

c) Goalie would be a huge issue for us. Look only as far as the Sens, arguably one of the most talented teams over the past decade where goal has haunted them for years and held them back from likely a cup or two.

In hindsight, the draft fell perfectly for the Pens given developments after 2003.

If you want to go in hindsight maybe picking someone else and signing a goalie might have given the pens some slight performance boosts and caused Malkin and Crosby to be missed...

Dion Phaneuf is a beast and will be for the next 15 years

the best of the draft in my opinion because D's like that appear only every 3-4 years
