Dmitri Tertyshny award

I think the Flyers should have a Tertyshny memorial award given anually to their best rookie. Any thoughts?

For those of you who don't know who he was:

In a year when you have three or four potential impact players competing for it it makes sense. But what if the team doesnt play any rookies? Or what if theres only one rookie? Or what if we have a cup of coffee with a dozen rookies and send them all back because they all sucked? Then it starts to look rediculous.

There's usually one rookie at least who plays enough games to be some sort of a factor (like Tertyshny)....the point is that he should be remembered with some sort of an award (see Lindberg and Dupre).

This is essentially what the most improved player is for. A rookie doesn't always win it, but a young player almost always does.

I dont live in PA and since this was before I had Center Ice or the intenet, I never really knew much about this kid. I know he was a rookie defenseman and how he died though.

What I was hoping to hear about though was what kind of prospect was he? Was he supposed to be really good? Who would you compare him to?

He was a very good prspect, certainly would have become a top 4 defenseman.
IMO he's have become a good puck moving #3 defenseman. Sort of a poor man's Tomas Kaberle.

He had a very bright future, that's for sure. I remember hearing the news while at sleep-away camp... truly tragic.

If the poster was asking about the players that were on the boat, the article linked in the first post includes: "The 22-year-old Russian was on the boat with two players from the minor-league Philadelphia Phantoms, Francis Belanger and Mi[k]hail Chernov, when the accident occurred Friday night on Okanagan Lake near Kelowna."

Woops, now that i think about it Recchi is way off, but i could have sworn that Richardson was on the boat. Guess not... weird how the memory works eh

GKJ i love you new avatar, that is the ****.

The Tertyshny tragedy was a real bummer indeed. My buddy who is a flyers fan from penticton, bc and myself were in Kelowna, and we checked out the location of the tragic boating accident.

His only problem in his rookie year was adjusting to the longer season and then he got hurt, but he certainly was improving as the season went on.

Just to make a suggestion: How about the best non-North American in the Flyers' system for this award? Not just to those players who performed for the Flyers but anyone in the team's system.

Reminds me of when Chris Therien was a rookie, they hazed him and gave him chores (like picking up pucks after practice) like they do all rookies.

Then come his second year......no rookies. So they kept piling on the same things. I remember him being relieved in year 3 because a rookie had made the team.

I like the idea of rewarding someone within the system as opposed to just on the Flyers' roster. They've got enough year end awards, and shouldn't diminish the value by making seem like some HS award ceremony.

Perhaps they could give it to the most improved player after Rookie Camp?
