Pick 2 Cities for Expansion

Yea yea yea... I know... not gonna happen. :p

BUT, let's just imagine for a second that the players give the owners a $30M cap as long as the league agrees to expand to 32 teams... and one of the two cities must be Canadian.

And, because we know the players want their tradition back, when the league goes to 32 teams, it'll return to a 4 division with the traditional division and conference names (Wales, Norris, etc.) and the playoffs will return to the format in which they were in the early 90's where the first two rounds were divisional playoffs. Okay, so this is more my wishes but this is my scenario so I'm gonna make it happen.

Just a couple thoughts.... remember to take the $30M cap into consideration because it would make many cities more viable. For example, Winnipeg's new 15,000 seat arena couldn't support a $45M team, but it probably could a $30M team.

here are my choices:

if it had to be two Canadian cities: Quebec City & Winnipeg
if it had to be two US cities: Houston & Seattle
if it had to be one Canadian city and one US city: Quebec City & Houston

No matter how high or low the salary cap may be (or if there is no cap), the NHL wants to put teams in the markets that would make the most money. No sense creating a team that barely competes financially, that is only kept alive because they have a rediculously low NHL salary cap that could be raised again in a future bargaining agreement.

Sadly for Winnipeg fans, their city is not too likely to obtain another team - at least not for many years.

I think by the rules you set out (which are not too likely to ever occur) the NHL would have to expand a second team into the Greater Toronto area (maybe Mississauga) and Houston.

no more expansion please... if anything, there are 4-5 teams too many in the NHL today.. talent is pretty diluded...

i'm all in favour of Winnipeg + Quebec coming back as long as they replace one of the southern states teams

If you want to talk about contraction and how you think there is a lack of talent, go somewhere else. That's not what this thread is about.

LOL.....

As if the Maple Leafs would allow another team anywhere remotely near the Greater Toronto area.

My picks:

1. Winnipeg
2. Quebec City

Toronto. The city could absolutely support one. Since in this scenario we're going back to non-geographical conferences, the new team could be in the other conference from the Leafs as to not interfere with the fan base as little as possible.

My second choice would be Houston, it is the better of the choices between Houston and Portland.

why must I go elsewhere? Am I not welcome in these boards? As you are discussing about a hypothetical situation of acquiring 2 new teams, I'm just suggesting hypothetically that we'd be better off replacing 2 southern teams with Qc + WPG.

I simply made a comment that I feel that there are a bit too many teams in the NHL today... I never said anything about contraction... i just mentioned that I was opposed to expansion.

As a fan that grew up watching hockey in the 80's, 90's and today, I've seen my share of expansion teams and I felt the need to express my views on the quality of hockey as a result of expansion. Was my opinion that way off?

I'm sorry you felt that I went slightly off-topic. My intent was not to make a mockery of your thread

Portland, Seattle, Saskatoon or Regina, Houston, Q. City, Halifax, Oklahoma, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, etc..... would all make decent spots IMO. IN Las Vegas, you would have No season tics holders, but sellouts every night.

If I had to pick 2 cities, Portland and Regina.

Does anyone know what Indianapolis' hockey history is like? It seems like it be a decent hockey city that would have a lot of close rivalries.

There is no way another hockey team would move into Texas. I know this for a fact that there is little to no fan fare for Hockey except in Dallas in Texas, maybe. We are huge, huge football, basketball, and baseball fans, especially in college. We have the Aeros, that's enough.

Why not Wisconsin? I'm serious! They have some great teams up there, including college so why not expand into Wisconsin?

Except for MAYBE in Dallas? That's ridiculous. They have VERY good fans there.

And everyone said Dallas wouldn't work so you're going to have to give me a little more evidence than that to convince me that Houston couldn't support a city.
