Super Series - Claude Giroux

Anyone been watching the Canada-Russia Super Series games? Claude Giroux has been playing on a line with Brad Marchand and Sam Gagner and he has one assist so far. He's also been featured in a Nike spot doing his offseason training, including racing a horse in a foot race! Looks pretty intense. Hope this link works, if not just google and you'll find the video.

I'm going to game 5 of the series in Winnipeg next week... should be great.

One thing to note - Turris has looked great. He has 2 goals in 2 games... sure hope JVR is the real deal and we didn't miss the next Yzerman or Sakic.

Soft? Wow.
I'd say he's quite the opposite, considering his (lack of) size.

He was awesome in game two yesterday. Him and Gagner have some serious chemistry...who was it that wanted to draft Gagner again? Oh yeah, me.

Hey, I wanted to drop down to the #5 or #6 slot and take Gagner too.

Giroux's going to start the hype machine up early this year. He just scored.

Canada solved substitute goalie Zhelbnyuk quickly in the third period as Giroux beat him through the five-hole with a shot from his knees at 5:35 for a power-play goal.

I am probably more excited about Giroux than any other prospect we have, except maybe for Ryan Parent.

I'm nervous about JVR. I think he'll make the NHL, but I worry he will be the second coming of Scott Thornton. Serviceable, but not outstanding. The good thing with Turris is that he is in Phoenix, so he won't come back to haunt the Flyers.

I know it's WAY too early to be skeptical, but that's what I do best...being skeptical and negative, I mean.

I think Giroux is going to be a real special player for us. Everywhere he's been, he's had to prove people wrong. I think he's going to fit right in in Philadelphia and be that dynamic offensive forward that this team hasn't had in a while. And by dynamic, I mean a 100+ point scorer.

As for Turris, yeah, I think that's one that really might come back and bite us. As for JVR and the Scott Thornton comparison, nah, I think JVR will have more offense to his game. For all the talk about JVR, he seems to be an awful lot Blake Wheeler - considerable size, but plays an offensive game; not quite the physical presence you expect for someone of their size, but aren't afraid to mix it up.

Excellent goal by Giroux today, who was down on is knees. Turris scored again, and as always it was a beauty.

So should I start preparing myself now for the rants on how Stevens isn't using Giroux properly when the kid only scores 40-50 points his rookie season?

I lost a bit of respect for Turris after I saw this dive (3:17). That's Eric Staal quality **** right there.

rangers fan here, so you know what im about to say means something.

Giroux is a helluva player. looks well refined in all aspects of the game. could use more strength, but hes a solid, solid prospect.

Thanks inferno, I have been pleased with what I have seen of him. Today he is having another good game so far. I've been pleased with how well he plays defense since most of what I have heard about him is about his offensive upside. But he has a nice all around game going for him. I am excited to see how much better he can get before he makes the Flyers next year (I think he is a bit of a long shot for this year).

(glad to see, for your sake, that Anisimov is back and playing today for Russia, no one wants to see any of their prospects hurt in this tournament)

Canada on its way to sweeping the Russian half of the series, and in turn, the entire series.

I don't think this is what Vladislav Tretiak was looking for.

If Giroux scores 40 to 50 points his rookie season, then I'm content with that. I'm not expecting him to come in and score 100 in his rookie season. I just hope they don't put him on a checking line or in a checking role to start because that would be a waste of his talent. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think you turn dynamic offensive players into checkers.

Giroux had a great game today. Assisted on Tavares' first goal of the tourney off a back handed pass from his ass to Gagner whom sent it to Tavares in the slot (expect this one to show up on highlight reels).

The most impressive shift I saw from Giroux was a penalty kill in the third when he controlled the puck down low in the Russian end for a good 20 seconds while the Russian Defensemen were going at him.

Overall from what I've seen, Giroux has played really well in both ends; however, I've seen him take a few lazy penalties.

Game Four:

http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/ne...anadian_hockey

Gagner's goal less than two minutes into the second period had the hosts on their heels again. Tavares got his first in the series and Canada's third of the game with a power-play goal at 12:19 thanks to a heads-up play by Claude Giroux.

Giroux fell on his behind near the faceoff circle but managed to backhand the puck down to Gagner, who fed Tavares in the high slot.

That looks pretty legit to me. He only weighs like 20 pounts, so if everyone on one side of the rink exhaled at him together he'd probably fall.
