Does this mean no Mario for the World Championships? I don't think he will be there now.

IMO, Lemieux should just retire. He's had a great career and a top 1-5 player in the NHL all-time. His body just can't handle the punishment anymore.

Sad day to be a Penguins fan or a hockey fan in general.

Could a trade be imminent? On ESPNEWS Ray Ferraro just said Insurance picks up 80 % of Lemieux's contract and it will help them financially.I don't know if Mario still makes 5 Mil or took less, but with most of his contract picked up, do you think he would approve a trade to bring in a semi-known player?Doesn't have to be an Iginla type, but a 20-25 goal scorer who most fans know.

When Mario's heart is in something you can count on him being back, and it certainly doesn't sound like he won't be back next year, maybe playing with Ovechkin...strange, insurance pays 80% of his salary and his pens save 80% of his salary....start the conspiracy theories, mario is out for the year and still gets his 10 million...jk

Isn't Lemieux only making $1 million this year. I remember him taking a pay cut not too long ago.

The insurance will pay roughly half of his salary.

If the insurance is 80% (it could be lower due to his age)

The penguins will have to pay him around $3 mill - the Insurance will cover the other $2mill

Trade??

More likely they will take that money and use it to pay Fleury's bonus once he passes the 9 game mark (from this point). Better than sending him back to juniors.

I believe Lemieux ended up taking a $5 million dollar raise this off season, did he not? I believe Lemieux is in the $10 million dollar range. So insurance would be picking up a lot more than just $2 million.

He rolled his salary back to $5 million right after Straka was traded.

OMG This is like right out of left field!!!one11

Honestly I was expecting this since November wasn't mario originally listed Day to Day with his hip injury?

if anything this is good news for the pens because Fleury's contract issue won't be too big a concern with the insurance.

Mario should not play in the worlds because that's just risking injury to himself when the Penguins are gonna need him next year to help ease in Ovechikn into the NHL.

Mario's time is near but not now, not like this, first he must pass on his toarch to someone and Ovechikn just might be that person.

that is unless Columbus wins the Lottery

Mario was getting paid 5 million as a "player" 2.75 million as president/ceo or whatever. And receive another 2.25 million deferment payment.

I believe Mario gave back the deferment money and his CEO salary. So he cut his "cost" to the organization in half after the Straka trade.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Or Washington. But if Columbus wins the lottery... Wow: Nash, Zherdev and Ovechkin on the same team. That'd be something to see.
