How can NYR trade up to the 1st pick in 09?

Of course they would need the luck of the lottery win once they secure the 1st pick of one of the shattier teams.

But how to go about getting that teams 1st NOW?

They don't. Every team wants Tavares. Like a Phoenix team, he would be the face of there franchise just like Crosby is in Pitt.

This is ridiculous. We are going for the cup why would we move assets for a player who MIGHT help 4-5 years down the line.

I'm fairly certain that this team is loading up to make a run now. We'd have to unload a pretty high end roster player in order to get a team thinking about dealing their number one with Tavares coming down the line. I don't think it can be done outside of a crazy overpayment by us. If I were a GM of a crappy team, I at least wait until mid season of 09 when I KNOW we suck, start dumping off my veterans that are keeping me from reaching rock bottom, sound the alarm and scuttle the ship. When that pick is certainly the #1, then I throw it up for bid and watch other GM's go into a frenzy to get it. Then I probably keep it anyway, because if the kid's as good as they say he is, you don't want to be on the wrong end of that deal. Nobody wants to be remembered as the guy who traded the savior of the franchise away ala Guy Lafleur.

Not that I think its a good idea, but I disagree that we would have to hurt our chances this year to move up. Montoya, Cherry, and our 1st rounder HAS to get us to the front of the line. Maybe not after the lotto, but if you could get that much for your 20% chance, you make that trade. We have the pieces to get things done without touching our '07-'08 roster... still a bad idea though

I'll be interested in seeing how much of a gleam Tavares has after two more seasons. I'm not suggesting he won't be the number one overall pick, but that's a long time to be under scrutiny.

i think the only way u get the number one overall pick is if u actually trade for the player that is drafted....but its a stupid idea- the rangers farm system is full of good prospects- dont need the 1st overall pick

You could trade Forsberg, Hextall, Simon, Ricci, Huffman, Duchesne, 2 1sts and $15 million cash for him.

It is never a good idea to throw established talent at a maybe.

Sure, start with Staal, Prucha, Montoya and go from there.

Nyr doesn't have a great history with high picks. I'll take 29 or 30.

Let's all send Tavares letters saying how we would love him to tank his draft year so we can pick him up. Let him know what kind of fans we are and how beloved he'd be in NY. Should work right?

Simple, have him go to russia and he will drop right into our laps because teams are afraid to draft a plyer with no transfer agreement.

The obvious answer is to take matters into our own hands and Tank like the Pentankers do on a regular basis. Hire Lemieux and Patrick as consultants should make that a snap. And yes, I know Patrick is not there.

That's the point of my post. Of course it would never happen, just like we're never going to trade for the 1st overall pick.

C'mon SoS you should know that isn't serious haha.

Crappy teams trading first round picks 2 years in advance is a thing of the 70s and 80s. Only way i can see a team like Phoenix trading there firs roudner in 09 would be if they got a 4-star prospect back who is ready to play in the NHL(say Marc Staal???).

i'd love to get Tavares but to make certain of that we'd have to give up way too much. Yes, he can be the next Crosby but even Crosby cant guarantee a cup.

I dont think we'd be willing to give up what it would take to get the pick, and we wont be in the position to have it anyway!!!!

Explain to me how we could make certain we could get him? There's absolutely no way. We won't even know which team wins the lottery for him until the spring of 2009, so how would you even know who to make a deal with until that time?

It also helped the that Lindros said he would never play for Quebec!
