Luongo didn't play to his full potential that series I don't care what anyone says.

Anyways,

1. ANAHEIM
2. DETROIT
3. CALGARY/COLORADO/MINNESOTA/VANCOUVER (Any team in the NW except Edmonton)

East:

Seems about right but I would say Dallas instead of Colorado as the Ducks alternate.

Dark Horse Teams: Colorado, Blues, Dallas, Florida, Tampa, Boston.

I always like to see the 7-8th seeded teams give a run (Edmonton06).

Seeing lots of people saying vancouver, as a canuck fan, i dont think we really have that much better of a team than last year, we improved our bottom 6, and a bit of depth on defense, but that still doesnt adress the issue we were fighting with. I think we still have an outside shot.

Rangers vs Red Wings

rangers in 7

There's not much more Luongo could have done, with the exception of him taking his eyes off the puck in Game 5, for the OT winner.

Well the pressure isn't on them anymore to be the Stanley Cup favourite. Stranger things have happened. Buffalo did not perform well in the playoffs last year and dug themselves into a hole early in the series with the Sens. Despite losing a lot of talent, the Sabres is still a very good team. It's not like they don't have a chance.

Although it could be construed as a homer pick i think the Flames have a legit shot at coming out the west this year, how a team that is as talented as the Flames managed to suck so bad last year really befuddled me.

Managed to have the most wins of any NHL team at home then went on the road and put the skirts on. Looking at the Flames this year they are slightly better up front and in net and about the same on the blueline(the top end could be considered weaker but the bottem is more solid this year). Hopefully Keenan will have more success motivating the troops on the road then Playfair did, I mean how often do you see bob mackenzie advocating canning a coach right before the playoffs? there was something funky going on with the flames last year and it wasn't just the wind blowing in from Vancouver.

I agree, but the Sabres still lost their 2 best players by far. They're still a playoff team, but to suggest that they're cup contenders with Vanek leading the charge is a bit much.

Of course with Miller between the pipes anything is possible, if not probable.

I'll go with Pittsburgh as a darkhorse.

Anyone else....no chance.

Zubrus was a deadline addition and got hurt late in the Rangers series anyway. Since the Sabres are in a much better cap situation this year, it's reasonable to assume the Sabres will be able to make a more significant addition at this year's deadline.

Drury and Briere are obviously big losses, but Buffalo effectively adds Connolly and a half season of Stafford. Vanek hasn't peaked yet offensively. Roy, Stafford, and Pominville are all still young and improving. Plus, we still have Hecht, Kotalik, and Afinogenov. That's a pretty deep group of forwards.

It's also unlikely that Buffalo will suffer as many injuries. Discounting Connolly's 80 man games lost (since I'm counting him as an addition it's not really fair to count his games) the Sabres still lost over 200 games to injury last season.

The President's trophy winners are returning their entire defense and goalie. Losing Briere and Drury while adding Connolly and Stafford isn't nearly as big of a drop off as you're anticipating. Buffalo is a legit contender if they add a gritty top-6 forward at the deadline.

Anaheim/San Jose-Ottawa/Pittsburgh/Toronto (yes, Toronto. Im probably beyond help, but my intuition tells they will make a serious playoff run ) Maybe its just that statistically, its starting to be their time...

Its the Martin havlat scenario. U can have all the skill in the world, but if you're injury prone that skill means jack in the 50 games per season u sit out.

This Sabres team is very fragile, it was guys like Drury and Briere that kept them alive when Conolly was riding an excercise bike the whole season.

You do know that 2 teams need to compete for the cup and not just Anaheim right?

Completely true, but he wasn't especially great in Game 3 and in Game 5 he could have completed his outright theft of the game had he kept his eyes on the puck.

When it comes down to it, I just don't think he'll make that mistake again.

Rangers, for sure.
1st line will go mesmerizing opposing goalies.
2nd line will drurify the garden of loose ducks.
A very good 3rd line will polish off other pests.
4th line betts will be rewarded as well.

A solid blue-shirted crew will mend fences, not tyuting their own horns but standing staal before the venerable king of the crease.

In the East, Ottawa or Pittsburgh. I don't see any reason to think that Ottawa won't be able to repeat their performance form this past year. The young guns on Pittsburgh, I think, need one more year of maturity. The Rangers is a possibility, but there is too much unproven about that team.
(from last Sept. predictions thread)

Nice picks.
