Hockey in Finland

Hello there,

I'm in the process of setting up a new blog about hockey in Finland. I've been writing a football one over the summer and have quite enjoyed it, now I'm looking to learn a bit more about hockey and hopefully provide useful information and interesting articles. To give you an idea of what I'm aiming for, take a look at the football site:

http://footballinfinland.blogspot.com

The hockey one will be different, as I know a lot less about the sport than I do about football. I have other contributors, and am on the lookout for more, so if anybody is interested in writing something for the blog just let me know.

I will mainly be posting results, tables and stats, and hopefully links to highlights. I would very much appreciate help in finding the best sources for this information. Any other ideas or suggestions will be gratefully received.

I can't help you much with hockey in Finland, considering I live in the US, but I just want to say thanks for this football blog, it'll make following the Veikkausliiga a lot easier for me! I can read the newspapers online, but it gets a little tiring as I don't read Finnish all that well. Looking forward to the hockey blog!

Thanks everyone, appreciate the tips.

there is a lengthy new post there by Yves that some of you may enjoy, and I'll try to link to the highlights after tonight's match.

Nice blog. I add it to my favourite bookmarks.

Btw I used to be a quite Owls fan in the 90's...still follow them a bit.

Waddle, Booth, Carbone, Blinker...those were the days.

They were indeed! Glad to hear that someone outside Sheffield enjoyed them too.

Now, can anyone point me in the direction of highlights? Iltalehti don't seem to have any.

If anybody would like to plug this on jatkoaika forum, I'd be much obliged. Their registration procedure is pretty complicated...

There is going to be something in SM-liigas official site: http://www.sm-liiga.fi/ajankohtaista/in-english.html
At the moment it just has "Coming soon...", hope it will be updated as the season goes on. A history section would be nice too.

I noticed just now that in SM-liiga's site there is a summary of every weeks.

The blog has moved to wordpress, and is now at http://hockeyinfinland.wordpress.com. We'll be keeping it updated as the play-offs draw on, and maybe posting a bit of Finnish perspective on the world championships. It'll be the first one I've ever seen so I'm quite curious to compare with football tournaments, but the other guys will have some actual insight.

I wonder if I might advertise the flickr photo stream, which adds photos direct from the Finnish hockey group on flickr. If you have any photos relating to Finnish hockey, however tangentially, and you wouldn't mind them being used by us, please join the flickr group and start uploading photos.

Have a look at the site, anyway, there is a lot more up there now. You could start with the soon to be completed Introduction to SM Liiga. Recent posts include muukalainen's round up of the weekend, his discussion of Finnish salaries and some pretty pictures of hockey locations in Tampere from me. I might like to revisit Aapo's stunned reaction to Wallinheimo's Moscow transfer later on to evaluate his predictions, but it's a good read now. My favourite HIF post so far, however, has to be Yves's defence of Saku Koivu's anglophonic existence in Quebec.

So please come and have a look around, consider letting us use your photos and if you feel like you have something to say then pipe up - we're always looking for new contributors.
