Joe Thornton - What should I expect for him in a trade?

I'm in a 12 team Dynasty hockey league (full roster and minor leagues carries from year to year) with a roster of 23 players and a salary cap of 70 million.

Currently my team looks like this...

F Elias, Patrick $7,500,000
F Thornton, Joe $6,670,000
F Gaborik, Marian $6,500,000
D Blake, Rob $6,000,000
F Kariya, Paul $6,000,000
F Nylander, Michael $5,500,000
F Murray, Glen $4,150,000
F Whitney, Ray $3,550,000
D Stuart, Brad $3,500,000
F Straka, Martin $3,300,000
D Zidlicky, Marek $3,200,000
D Mara, Paul $3,000,000
G Huet, Cristobal $2,750,000
D Preissing, Tom $2,750,000
F Sykora, Petr $2,500,000
F Ruutu, Tuomo $2,250,000
F Boyes, Brad $1,600,000
F Plekanec, Tomas $1,400,000
G Toskala, Vesa $1,375,000
F Vermette, Antoine $1,075,000
D Phaneuf, Dion $942,400
F Forsberg, Peter $0
F Selanne, Teemu $0

I'm considering trading Joe Thornton to upgrade my goaltending. What should I expect in return for Thornton though? I see him as a top 3 fantasy player so i'm knowing it should be a lot I just can't peg what that might be.

For instance, I was offered Kovalchuk and a 1st in 2008. 12 teams so the pick is a top-12 NHL draft pick in a deep draft. I currently have 2 1st rounders in 2008 so the pick isn't overly appealing to me.

What do you think of the offer? Has Thornton been traded in your leagues? If so, for what?

Thanks for your assistance.

I'd get Kovalchuk just because I like flashy goal scorers more than great playmaker like Joe. Your goaltending is an issue and you d, while not bad, could use a little more depht. Me thinks you could try to ship off Thorton and one of Ruutu or Boyes for Kovalchuk and a depht d-man. If you have drafts during the season, I'd suggest to wait until then to get new goaltending as there's always some darkhorse that shines enough to make it in fantasy teams.

Well you definitely need help in net.

I'm not going to add up your cap numbers so I don't know how much you've got left, but find a GM who's got two solid goalies, and work out a deal for one of them. Not straight up, but make it Thornton and a depth forward for the goalie and a quality d-man or something.

What're you planning on doing with Forsberg and Selanne?

If it were me I would try to move Thornton and Huet for an elite goaltender and a decent center to take Joes spot.

Keeping them for now. I've had conditional deals offered to me where i'd get such and such for Selanne and more if he plays yadda yadda but I finished 2nd last year and can win it all this year if I just improve my goaltending so I won't be making a move like that.

What goalies would you consider going after?

Luongo, Brodeur...anything else worth it in your opinion?

ship off Thornton and Huet and get Luongo and a good forward.. Thornton can arguably get anything in a trade besides Crosby so its worth a try..

My league isn't even biting on Thornton. Very active league too.

Luongo isn't even being shopped. Nor is Brodeur. Neither will be traded for anything.

I can't get a goalie from anyone in this league now that I want one but I traded Nabokov and Fernandez for relative small return when I see what a premier goaltenders have become now. Why, oh why, did San Jose trade Toskala not Nabby?

Any good pooler, scratch that, any good hockey fan knew that with Nabokov's salary he wasn't going anywhere. I tell you, there's always darkhorse goalies that become available during the year. Guys like Legace, Denis/Holmqvist, even Kolzig could become interesting fantasy-wise.

For Joe? The moon ... I would keep him and move Elias if I were you ... but if you must trade him, someone like Luongo or Brodeur for sure and try to throw in an underrated center like Ryan Getzlaf or Andy McDonald. Best of luck with that ...

Any halfway decent dynasty GM will not trade you a goalie for a forward. Goalies are far and away the most important position in the league and will always have far more value than any F including Crosby. I personally think youre up the creek and need to just try to get a hold of any young G prospects and hope they pan out for you, or pursue a middle of the road goalie, Thornton+ shouldnt be enough to get you a top tier netminder in my mind, they are just too valueable to trade.

There was definately a 50/50 shot Nabby was moved. Lot's of so-so teams would have killed to have him regardless of his salary.

I picked up Osgood for now and just traded Rob Blake for a pick. Osgood should get 27-30 starts as Detroit doesn't work Hasek too heavily.

I traded Nabokov and Tanguay for Mike Green, Corey Perry, and the 1st overall pick (Kane). Hopefully it works out for me.

Huet, Toskala, and Osgood should be decent for me this year and I have Pogge, Halak, Cann in my minor leagues at the moment. I've also got a good number of picks in next years draft so i'll have to take a stab at a goaltender there.

Hopefully some team that's out of the running and going for a rebuild will move a goalie near the trade deadline.

I just finished trading Chara and Nagy for Elias and Preissing. I really like Elias and think he'll get back up there. I had only picked up Nagy 2 days before off waivers and unloaded some salary in the deal so it worked for me.

As it stands now i'm still over the cap though so another deal or two will need to be made, hopefully bringing in a goaltender.
