2007 Training Camp thread. All training camp talk here.

2007-08 Tampa Bay Lightning Training Camp

With the Lightning set to open up their 15th training camp in less then a week, the time has come to get back to talking hockey! Anyone who can make it over to Brandon, if you could post updates here, it would be greatly appreciated.

Biggest pre-camp discussion points:

Goaltending

Three goalies, 2 spots. Who will make the team, and who will emerge as the starter? Obviously, Denis has to be feeling the most pressure, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Secondary Scoring

One of the weak area's last year, will our second line emerge and put pucks in the net? Will the third line contribute offensively?

Effect of new assistant coach

I think this is a real "sleeper" going into camp. With Ramsey gone, how will this effect the defense and the PP? (Assuming that is Sullivan's responsibilities)

You can make a good case the Lightning has the stuff to challenge for the Eastern Conference championship. You also can argue it has so little of one crucial element, the season will be another scramble to make the playoffs.
It is a classic half-empty, half-full showdown, and it will be played out beginning with the team's 15th training camp that gets rolling Thursday at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon.

A little pre-camp stuff..

There was a pretty humorous (although not at first) moments this morning. Dan Boyle looked frustrated at one point late in the morning, so when Blair Jones came down left wing with the puck, Boyle landed a solid hip check and drove Jones into the boards (that’s not something you see too often in these sessions). Both players got up unscathed, but as they did somebody on the bench (Andre Roy or Nick Tarnasky, maybe?) yelled out, “Hey Jonesy, go get him’’.... Later Boyle, still venting some frustration, came down right wing and fired a slap shot that sailed high over Marc Denis (again, not something you normally see as players do not want to hurt anybody).

More pre-camp tidbits and baby talk..
Quote:
The way I see it, all the Lightning needs is average work from whoever is in net (and by average I mean a .900 save percentage) for the team to be a contender in the East. Vinny Prospal also is a given as is how Michel Ouellet and Jan Hlavac mesh with Richards. Gratton, well, he might be the most important acquisition of the summer given his goal-scoring ability and faceoff prowess.
Quote:
Babies also are coming. Right wing Marty St. Louis said he and wife Heather will have their third child, and third son, in January. Forward Ryan Craig said he and wife Jaydee will have their first child, a son, in December.

With the radar zeroing in on Thursday's start of Lightning training camp, Marc Denis would like nothing more than to fly underneath all the blips and bleeps the media put out while searching for stories.
But it would be nearly impossible for Denis to simply go about his business in his second season with Tampa Bay. After being acquired from Columbus, his first season with the Bolts could only be described as a disappointment

Tampa Bay will be bringing defenseman David Schneider to training camp on Thursday to replace 2005 first-round pick Vladimir Mihalik, who will report directly to camp for Norfolk next week. Schneider, a 5-foot-9 offensive style defenseman, played the past four seasons in Finland before Tampa Bay signed him as a free agent this summer.

Jay doesn't think he's NHL-ready and Mihalik's groin is a bit tight so they don't want to put him through Camp Torturella.

Aww, I was hoping to see the giant one at camp, but oh well. Hope he heals up properly and gets lots of time in Norfolk.

Oh, son of a *****, Boyle! Taking shots at Marc? *******.

If I were Marc, I'd have hit him in a tender area with the big stick.

***Okay, so I'm a little sensitive lately.***

Was at the first day of trainging camp... We seem to have team black and team white... Vinny, Marty with Holmer were in black and Brad his line, Gratton, Ramo and Denis were in white... They did their laps chase thing (can't remember what it's called..lol) today.. Ramo was the slowest guy on the ice..lol
As I said in the other thead on the new uni's.. the pants have a blue stripe between two small gray stripes with a lightning bolt going down the middle they look ok.. The socks are awful.. black with a white vertical stripe going down the back of them... So looking at them from the front you see all black when they turn around you see this ugly ass white stripe going down the back...

These are the numbers that some of the new guys were wearing...

Gratton did have his #77 on..
Ouellet #7
Lukowich #37
Jancevski #2
Smaby # 32
Hlavac #17

don't know if these will be the numbers they stay with or not..

I wouldn't get too worried about the socks. I've seen lots of pics from informal workouts from lots of teams and these just seem to be generic practice socks.

How many were actully at training camp. I remeber under Davidson there was only going to be like 30 or something to cut down on costs. Now that there is new management did that go up? is there a roster somewhere?

I counted 16 on "team black" and "team white" had the 3 groups of 4 players with one group of 5 players(extra goalie) doing the laps ...so about 33 in all...

There were no real disasters among the players during the six, three-lap sprints they had to skate on the first day of training camp at the Ice Sports Forum. Distinguishing himself was Doug Janik (and I'll have more on him in tomorrow's paper) and the usual suspects, especially Vinny Lecavalier and Marty. Defenseman Shane O'Brien showed off some stamina after trimming down to 224 from 237 pounds. And defenseman Jay Leach showed some speed.
"It doesn't transform into what they're going to do on the ice as far as a hockey player,'' Tortorella said. "But it tels me they are here to compete for a job because they are doing something they can control. They took care of the conditioning part of it.''
