Hey guys- i just had this question come to my mind

very unlikely.

You got D men like Jack and Erik Johnson plus a few scorers like Toews etc... he is a nice idea but he wont make the Rangers this year.

why dont they have 2 rookie awards, one for the forwards and one for defense and goalies, that would make alot of sense. Like they should have an award for offensive and defensive dman.

you cant split it so much that you have an offensive and Defensive awards for just D men but having an offensive rookie of the yr and an D rookie of the year isnt out of the question. After all they have an offsnive player of the week as well as a defensive.....

decent idea but doubt it'd ever happen.

Staal has a chance, but that's about it.. and still the competition is very good.

Staal would have to make it to the team from day 1 (which i think may happen) put up atleast 35 points and play excellently most nights to have a chance and even then if Toews or someone puts up 80ish points he'd lose out.

its simply harder for D men to win the award. The year that Jackman one it there was very little competition.

saying that, i'd love Staal or a Ranger to win the award.

Who was the last Ranger to win it??????????????????

that surprises me but then between 97-2003 we hardly had any contenders!

Its a shame that Henrik's draft class was a s good as it was... in any other year he'd have won it. To be fair, in most years gone by Prucha's rookie numbers would have warranted serious contention...30 goals etc.

I think Mike York was in the running in 99-00. But yeah we havn't really had any Rookie of the year level prospects for a long time.

the way he started his career i as genuinely excited. he had 49(?) points and was part of an excellent line.

Shame what happened to him.

Tony Amonte was third for the Calder if I remember correctly.

Leetch, Amonte, & York were the Rangers of the recent era to be finalists (and winner in Brian's case).

it would be nice if we can. If he dresses the whole year he has the talent to challenge, however whether they'll feel he's ready for full time duty by then remains to be seen. hope so!

Winning the rookie of the year is all about getting a big role for your team, allot of ice time and especially special teams for a skater.

There is always some rookie goalie who wins a starting job, or a skater who ends up on a working top PP unit and puts up good numbers. That pretty much automatically means around 65-70 pts for a skater, and that have always been valued more by the voters then 40 pts for a D in the past.

There is no way that Anisimov or Dubinsky will end up on the top PP unit for us, and I think its extremely unlikely that he will end up on our 2nd PP unit.

Staal got a remote remote shot at the Calder. Though I think he needs to get like 40 pts to have a shot, and I just don't see that happening either.

I personally wouldn't mind Malik with Mara and Staal with Rozsival, then Marc might have better odds...

Nick Backstrom, WSH. If you've got extra money around and access to a bookie, place the bet.

theres no way anisimov can win it unless he does something insane like score 40 goals and throw up another 60 assists. youve got guys like backstrom, toews, mueller, the 2 johnsons, staal, price,

anisimov is a nice young player, but to even think about the calder is getting way way way way way way ahead of yourself.

I think the Rangers have a shot to have a finalist in two players actually. Staal has already been mentioned as a Calder candidate, but please do not forget Ryan Callahan, he still qualifies, has scored like crazy everywhere, has NHL experience, and if he somehow makes his way into the top six (I think it is certainly a possibility) he has a good shot at having a Calder type of year.

That said, I think the favorites are:

Backstrom
Toews
Mueller
E. Johnson

But I don't think our two guys are too far behind in their chances, especially if no rookie comes out scoring like crazy like in the last two races. If so, it gives a good opportunity for a defenseman like the Johnsons, Staal or Letang.

Come on, man...I mean its nice to be hopeful, but if we're going to have a real discussion about the Calder, his name isn't even in the top 10 preseason candidates...and I promise some of those that are, will outplay him.

I totally disagree, the kid was a 50 goal scorer in Guelph in his overage year and really came into his own. After that he was an AHL all-star in his first year in the pros scoring like crazy, then came into the NHL and proved that he can play at that level as well. If he were to find his way onto a scoring line for the New York Rangers I could see him being a huge surprise. What would your top ten favorites look like for the Calder?? Here's mine and Callahan is included:

1) Backstrom
2) Toews
3) E Johnson
4) Mueller
5) J Johnson
6) Staal
7) Kane
8) Little
9) Callahan
10) Sheppard

Who else do you realistically put above him?? A couple of the players I listed above are very doubtful as to whether they will make the NHL this season, much less score in bunches. I honestly do not expect more than 50 - 60 points from Toews or Backstrom this season. And I honestly don't expect, but think Callahan could hit that number under the right circumstances as well. There are not many guys on that list who have NHL experience and have a spot on their team's roster right now except for Callahan, it gives him a big advantage.

Due to the lockout you had twice as many rookies in the league. Without the lockout it would've been Oveckin vs. Henrik for the Calder.
