Agreed. Great value at #30, but I don't see him has a mid-first rounder as some would suggest, even being a LW.

Great choice, I had him at #4 on my goalie list. He went later than he should have, IMO.

But here's the thing about Carolina and Tampa: they won with MVP worthy peformances by goalies who, frankly, aren't good enough to be selected in the all-time draft. Which really proves my point: even the last of the No. 1 goalies selected is good enough to steal more than one series.

Having said that, bluebleeder got a steal with Hall at No. 31. #66 would be proud of you. Hall was good enough to backstop Nanaimo to the last championship.

MXD, Lindsay went No. 16 last time. And that's where he belongs. In terms of building a team, Terrible Ted is a gimmie for a top 20 pick. And it's not just an LW thing, either: it's a competitiveness thing, it's a leadership thing, it's a toughness thing, and it's a skill thing.

Surprised it took so long to come to that decision. I know JFF holds Fetisov in very high regard.

Agree on the former point and a good case could be made for the latter. An awesome player. With all due respect for Lidstrom, I rate Fetisov as the best European defenceman of all-time.

BTW, belated congrats to the Bombers on landing the all-time Bomber, Bobby Clarke. I've never actually taken in a game at the hallowed Whitney Forum in the Flon, but a lot of my friends in the game have. And there's nothing like it. Playing in the Flon is like playing in a fishbowl. Clarke will help Fetisov et al with their adjustment. But there's nothing like the Whitney Forum in hockey today. Fans are right on top of you, and they're rabid. They taunt. They talk smack. They yell and scream. They throw stuff at you. If you're not dodging beer cups, you're dodging a moose's leg. Opposing teams have needed police escorts to get out of the arena.

A lot of visiting players love being in the Flon because of the atmosphere. Those are guys you want on your team. Others don't. They come down with the "Flin Flon Flu." Those are guys you don't want on your team.

And rightfully so. In a draft with as many participants as this one, elite two-way defensemen are going to be a scarce commodity.

cottonking has been pm'd, and is now on the clock.

Too bad, I hoped I could land Lidström or Fetisov. That would have been a nice defensive pair with Kelly.

Not as nice as when you had Potvin and Kelly.

Look at you guys getting greedy, lol I'd be happy with just one top 15 defenseman, not looking good one will still be available 10 picks from now.

Seeing as depending on who you ask there could be at least 20 different defensmen that are considered as top-15 guys, I think you're in good shape.

That is true, but there were less teams back then.

Yeah, I know. But even with less teams that was still a ridiculous duo.

Jacques Plante being the top goalie selected raises my eyebrows. I have no doubt in my mind that Hall and Sawchuk were better, as were Roy and Hasek. Plante could be as high as 5th or as low as 8th among goalies, depending on how you feel about him vs. Brodeur, Durnan, and Dryden.

Actually, we did an internal poll of the GMs during the last draft, and Plante was chosen as the best ever. Roy, Sawchuk and Hasek were the other options. Not sure how it would change this draft, with so many new GMs (and six GMs gone from the last draft), but you're the first whose come out and said you regard Plante as low as No. 5.

Incidentally, I think Plante's the best ever.

That is very surprising. Glenn Hall's credentials are better. 7-time first team all-star in the exact same era, against Plante and Sawchuk and Bower. The FTAS was like winning the vezina back then. I do believe that would make him the unofficial Vezina leader.

..and come playoff time both Sawchuk and Plante were better.

As far as I remember (not sure though) it was quite close. Plante didn´t run away with the win.

Too....many.....undrafted....players.
I voted for Hasek or Sawchuk by the way. Hasek for peak Sawchuk for obvious reasons.

A little exercize I use to judge the nhl's best all-time goalies is to add up their cups, vezinas (FTAS before 1983), smythes, and harts. (Each counts for one point. It is hard to argue that as indivual accomplishments, that one means significantly more than the other) The only problem I see with it is that it tends to skew the results in favour of two goalies who played on unreal teams, Plante and Dryden. Other than that, it tends to follow the general consensus regarding who the best of all-time are.

To take it further and attempt to make it more accurate, you could add half a point for hart runners-up, cup finals losers, and vezina runners-up (STAS before 1983). Never tried that, though… only thought about it.
