Tom Renney's State of the Rangers

Tom Renney met with the media this morning

Quote:
Asked about the implications his roster decisions might have on the salary cap, though, Renney conceded it was a consideration
Quote:
Which brings up whether Marc Staal has a chance to make the team out of camp. Renney said the defenseman was “excellent” in Traverse City, and later said, “There’s no reason to think he won’t be given a real good shot and some serious consideration.”
Quote:
When I asked Renney about the back-up goaltending situation, he said he had an idea in mind of how many games he wants Henrik Lundqvist to play, and beyond that, “We’ll give the (back-up) job to the person who fits best what we need.” I suppose that’s a fairly obvious answer. The larger question is whether it is Stephen Valiquette or Al Montoya who fits the Rangers needs.

Clayton Barthel has been invited the Rangers camp after his play in the rookie tournamemt

Pretty much par for the course.

He's not going to give away much, it will be exciting to see what happens this camp and see what decisions they make.

Camp is here!!

Does anyone know if Jordan Owens will be in camp? I thought he earned an invitation but this seems to say he won't be at camp, unless he was invited previously...

Well, Owens is on an AHL contract, so I don't think that means he's automatically invited...it might be a situation where the Rangers like him but don't think he has any real shot at making the big team right now, and would rather just see him get ready for Hartford.

According to Blueshirt Bulletin, Owens was invited to camp.

Quote:
Fifty other players are expected when camp opens tomorrow with physical and medical exams. There will be six goalies -- Lundqvist, Valiquette, Montoya, Wiikman, Zaba, and Chris Holt -- no Antoine Lafleur, at least not as of now. Seventeen defensemen are currently listed -- Rozsival, Malik, Mara, Tyutin, Girardi, Kasparaitis, Pock, Strudwick, Staal, Sauer, Sanguinetti, Andrew Hutchinson, Baranka, Busto, Liffiton, Jake Taylor, and Corey Potter -- Barthel makes eighteen. Eighteen wingers -- Jagr, Shanahan, Avery, Straka, Prucha, Callahan, Hossa, Hollweg, Orr, Dawes, Dupont, Bourret, Korpikoski, Jessiman, Dane Byers, Greg Moore, Francis Lessard, and Mitch Fritz -- no David Kveton, Tomas Zaborsky, or David Skokan. And nine centers -- Drury, Gomez, Betts, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Pyatt, Barnes, Bruce Graham, and Jordan Owens.

Thanks NYR32. lol I got lost in researching the Traverse stats and I didn't make it to Blueshirt today. I'm glad he's in camp though, I'd like to actually see him play.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Gartner will get serious first line minutes.

Are you kidding? Gartner is nowhere near consistent enough to warrant first line minutes. sheesh

A big question for Renney to solve heading into training camp is how to integrate Gomez and Drury into the roster. "I've got a number of different combinations in mind that I'll end up trying," he said. "I don't want to be experimenting twenty games into the season, but I want to know what works for us. We'll see some different combinations through training camp. It's not just, there it is. We've got to get ourselves into a certain rhythm, combinations of people that will have success." How does Jaromir Jagr fit into that? "Jaromir is an outstanding player who can adjust and adapt to anybody," Renney said. "It doesn't suggest for a minute that others might not have to work within what he likes to do too. But that's the beauty of the building of the New York Rangers. That's the fun of it. I don't think it's going to be a real issue. We're going to have to let that evolve, be patient as it happens. But these are professional players -- they'll sort things out as they're given the opportunity to play together, talk and communicate."

Renney invited Antoine Lafleur-52 players at camp

Quote:
Renney was so impressed with both Lafleur and defenseman Clayton Barthel, a former Washington draft pick invited to the prospects tournament on a tryout basis, that he invited these two players to join the Rangers' main training camp. The additions of Lafleur and Barthel brought the total number of players in camp to 52, a full 12 fewer than what team started with last year

delighted LaFleur has made a good impression/start to his Rangers career. Hope he ahs a good camp and then has a great year in the Q.

I wonder if Barthel can be another free agent steal?!?! i must be honest i have never heard of the guy (shame on me!!) but im hoping he and Busto can make nice pick ups and add to our depth.

The Rangers liked Barthel in his draft year-2004.A guy who used to post here and had good info(Park was his nickname)mentioned Barthel as a player the Rangers liked heading into the draft

The Rangers could give Barthel an AHL contract and have him split the season in Hartford/Charlotte.That is the road traveled by both Dan Girardi and Corey Potter. Both players signed NHL contracts the following summer

Girardi and Potter were the examples i was thinking of. i hope he follows the same path too. it will be difficult for him as we have a lot of good young D coming upw ithin the next 2-3 years but i hope he gets the opportunity.

At the veryworst he can be a good depth guy and fall back option in the ECHL/AHL as you suggest.

Im impressed that the Rangers seem to do their homework and act upon these FA guys quickly. The same was for Girardi, Busto etc....

Hope they pan out.
