Guess they solved THAT problem today...

What a great trading day for the D'Backs. Adding Haren makes our rotation almost as good as the 1-2 punch we had with Randy and Curt in 2001. Getting a big return for Valverde (who had his career year last year) is also big -- and Lyon and Pena are both far more consistent as potential closers. And then getting rid of clubhouse cancer Callaspo...

In hockey terms, it's as if the Yotes traded Zbynek Michalek for Evgeni Malkin...

Not a huge Haren fan. I still want Kuroda. That would be a lethal combo.

Webb - Haren - Kuroda - Johnson - Owings

It's a lot of money, but I don't see why the D'Backs can't spring the cash considering the potential of that rotation.

Bill Buckner should probably change his name or something though (the guy we got for Callaspo.)

Well, I think that sake boat has sailed already, but we could get lucky...

May not be a simple matter of cash though. I know the D'Backs upped their offer significantly yesterday but Kuroda might want a different team environment...

But I agree, that rotation would be absolutely sick. Although with Johnson's back the way it is I'd make him the #5 starter.

I disagree with Papa Grande, i for one really like him, his emotions,
personality & when he brought the heat no one could hit him. He did blow game 2 of the NLCS, But that may have been more b/c he was left out there too long.. I'm guessing were not going after that Japanese Pitcher now that we have Hurrang?

I'm guessing he misspelled "Harang," with whom he confused Danny Haren.

I like both trades.

Valverde was a fan favorite and was very entertaining but let's not get carried away. This is the same guy who has confidence problems. This is probably the most you can get for a closer and Valverde has reached his peak. We can find another closer in less than a minute(Qualls, Lyon, Pena etc.) I imagine Valverde going into the same route as Armando Benitez.

...or Eric Gagne. Or Matt Mantei. When you have guys throwing that hard they're bound to implode at some point. Rivera and Hoffman are finesse pitchers so their shelf life has been a lot longer than power closers.

I love Valverde's passion but he's a power pitcher and once you get a career year out of those guys it's a very few who can maintain that level of play -- and Valverde is too much of a roller coaster on the mound for me to believe that he's going to match last season's performance.

I wish him luck with his new team and look forward to having Lyon in the closer's role.

Gagne doesn't count, he was doing the drugs. What about the kid, Shuzingerer (spelling?) our 1st rounder for 2 yr ago? I sensed he was probabbly more of a middle guy, maybe a closer?

Max Scherzer. And I believe you are correct and he projects to pitch out of the bullpen. I could be wrong though.

Love the Haren deal. I wanted him way back. The Valverde deal, I'm skeptical about. I'll wait and see on that. I'm gonna miss the intensity, though. It was especially impressive because I'm usually pretty drunk by the time the ninth inning rolls aroiund.

yup...How do they let the UofA in when ASU beat them twice, finished with a better conference record. I hate College B-Ball for this reason. You let Mother Mary College of Maryland in but not an ASU. I get they won their conference but P-L-E-A-S-E. ASU would mop the floor with them.

D'Backs have the depth to fix that. Bummer for him, but it's not terminal.

You would think the wonderful writers at the republic would do more background research into throid cancer beyond consulting webMD.com. Hey rep, try talking to an actual doctor.

Good to see the Diamondbacks start their title defense on the right foot.

They are going to be awful this year. And they didn't win any "titles." That'd be like the Sharks winning the pacific and then saying next year they have a "title" to defend. Only one that matters is the World Series.

I'm not going to argue about the title, but how exactly are they going to be awful this year? Apart from losing Valverde, they haven't gotten any worse, and Valverde was going to end up being a very expensive liability anyway.
