Drew Stafford

ok im kinda bored so just to see the thoughts,

I remember when Stafford was very high on Sathers draft board and most of us were pissed to see that, and thought at 6 overall( i think that was our pick) was way to high for him

my question is would you rather have stuck with montoya or have taken Stafford?

Stafford has turned into a very good prospect/young player. But he still would have been a reach at 6.

We all have the benefit of hindsight and we've seeen what Lundqvist has become. But at that time, Montoya was the right pick. Nobody knew what this Swedish goalie drafted in the 7th round might become. The goalie of the future and present had just missed an entire year due to injury.

Montoya was the right pick.

I just remember wanting us to take Andrew Ladd. Unfortunately he was off the board when we picked...wonder if we would have still selected Monty?

I'm sure if Ladd were there, the Rangers would have taken him.

And I do recall being upset and surprised that Sather could not have bested Carolina's offer for that pick.

Of course take Stafford now. For that matter, you might very well take Zajac and Meszaros over Stafford or Montoya.

I don't think there was hate for Stafford. I think there was a strong feeling that 6 was too early for him. And I think there was concern would take him at six because Sather has a relationship with Stafford's family. His father worked for the Oilers or some such.

It's just one of those things you look back on. Stafford is a solid player now and looking at current value yeah he probably would have been a better pick only because of what he is doing for Buffalo vs what Montoya is doing for the Rangers. However you never know if he would have stayed available for the Rangers to land or if he would still be with the franchise and not traded away. I wouldn't mind seeing him as a Ranger though sometime in the future. I also think a lot of the dislike/hate was more aimed at Sather and how he ran the organization and draft (going for personal ties rather than what is best for franchise) at that time rather than at Stafford himself

i absolutely HATED the montoya pick. but thats cause i read enough about Henrik to know that he would be, at the very least, a serviceable goalie till we could make a deal for a legit #1. #1 goalies are much cheaper than #1 forwards.

My pick would have been Olesz.

Olesz hasnt done much as of yet, but the skill is there. Maybe I woulda been wrong, maybe i woulda been right, but its what i woulda done regardless.

i wasnt happy about the montoya pick either i like olesz a lot to i was suprised he was there, but i also like thelen a lot

but i have a feeling montoya will net us a young proven d-man at one point i wish parent wasnt already traded i would have love to trade for him striaht up and unite the staal parent tandem

I remember reading about that about a week and a half or so before the draft, and then they got on the Montoya bandwagon inside a week, citing Blackburn's status.

The one defender I wanted was Barker, but I knew he would be gone by the 3rd pick, which Chicago had, and I was right.

I still think in hindsight we should have taken Meszaros, Wolski, or Zajac over Korps.

I think this is spot on in terms of analyzing the draft process, and the notion of using the draft to improve the franchise. At the time, the goaltending situation was up in the air big time, and though Lundqvist may have been a hot commodity from within, he was still yet to see NHL action. Montoya was the right pick for that reason - as well as the fact that Stafford would have been a reach at 6 per most draft boards.

I'm real curious to see Montoya in NHL action. I think he has the skills to be a starter somewhere.

At the time Stafford probably was stretching it as the #6 pick. Over the long term, who knows?

I like Stafford but also think that he's a good player who looks better in a great system. Buffalo has done a good job of making a lot of good and even very good players look better than they would be elsewhere. It's a testament to their coaching staff really.
