Does Sauve have to clear waivers?

With all this talk about the Avs potentially acquiring a veteran backup goaltender, the question I have is whether or not Sauve can be sent to Hershey without clearing waivers.

If not, then I don't see the Avs swinging a netminder trade, unless Sauve is part of the deal.

Anyone know the answer to this question?

I don't know if he has to clear waivers. However, if the Avs try to move Sauve down to Hershey then he's done as an Avalanche player. He's more than paid his dues and pretty much done everything at the AHL level. If he gets moved down they might as well trade him because he won't sign another contract with the Avalanche. Plus Hershey has two very good netminders already and it would be near a total waste to put either Lawson or Budaj in the ECHL.

I doubt rookies have to clear waivers. Otherwise, the Pens would never consider sending MA Fleury to their affiliate.

CAN'T DO THAT WITH 1st year CHL DRAFT PICKS, its either A) stay with the big club or b) go back to the CHL no AHL for them.

"Any player who has played three seasons since signing his first NHL contract or has played 180 NHL games must clear waivers before he is assigned to a minor league affiliate."

So if he had an NHL contract for the 3 years he played in Hersey, yes he would have to clear waivers.

I don't know where you found that info, but as i understand it regular season waivers is regulated in paragraph 13.4 in the CBA (se below). And Sauve signed his entry level contract as a 20 year old. So he is exempt for four years or 80 NHL games.

13.4. Waiver Draft/Regular Season Waivers. With the exception
of those exempt Players set forth below, Players party to Player
Contract must be cleared through the waiver draft and/or regular
season waivers prior to being assigned to a minor league Club:

GOALIES
Age / Years from Signing / NHL Games Played
18 / 6 / 80
19 / 5 / 80
20 / 4 / 80
21 / 4 / 60
22 / 4 / 60
23 / 3 / 60
24 / 2 / 60
25+ / 1 /

SKATERS
Age / Years from Signing / NHL Games Played
18 / 5 / 160
19 / 4 / 160
20 / 3 / 160
21 / 3 / 80
22 / 3 / 70
23 / 3 / 60
24 / 2 / 60
25+ / 1 /

And further down in paragraph 13 this note appears:

1. For purposes of this Article, a "year" of exemption
shall mean a playing season and the waiver draft following such
season.
