Traditionally (recently): Centers are good team leaders, strong two way players and either slick passes or good all around game. Right winger is the scorers position, usually the stronger of the two wings, more skilled and specialized players go here. Left wing is for the strong up and down two way wingers, not as much scoring (Goalies have their stick on the players left) and since most skilled left wingers end up on the right side to cut in, the left wing is limited in depth. Defense is the smart hockey players' place. They are the teams organizers and you base your style of how your defense clicks. Good passing, quick movement, hard shot and size are usually key here. Goalies need the best reflexes on the team and an almost arrogant swagger. These guys are the usually the oddballs and usually the quickest/most agile skaters on the team.
