Pirates show off new apparel
Quote:
Portland, ME - You either love’em or hate’em (Sort of like the Boston Red Sox eh?), but in the end you have to just live with’em. No, I’m not talking about your spouse or significant other in your life, but the new RBK Edge jersey.

The Portland Pirates unveiled their jersey’s today in front of an eager few who made the preseason trip to the Cumberland County Civic Center to see Eric Weinrich and family model off the new threads in hopes of slapping down a few bucks in being one of the first to own a new jersey.

Matt Auffrey and Matt Christie
While in Auffrey's case this is correct, I believe that for all intents and purposes, Christie's rights at the NHL level are unsigned. Unlike Auffrey, his NCAA class has graduated and he was not signed by the August 15th deadline. He does however have an AHL deal with Portland.

Pirates prepare for weekend battle

Quote:
Portland, ME - The Pirates held a late afternoon scrimmage as part of their two-a-day practice schedule in preparation for the weekend’s exhibition schedule.

It was mostly a chance for Pirates Head Coach Kevin Dineen to get read on several players and evaluate who will play in the preseason games this weekend.

Rookie's injury causing problems in goal for Pirates
Bobby Goepfert hasn't been able to participate in training camp, creating a goaltending shortage.

Quote:
During the first two days of the Portland Pirates' training camp, rookie goalie Bobby Goepfert has been on the outside looking in.

While his new teammates were skating at the Cumberland County Civic Center, Goepfert has been in the training room riding a stationary bike.

A groin injury has kept Goepfert, a much-heralded collegiate goalie, from playing.

5-2 win over Manchester. Manchester controlled the first half of the game, but Portland rallied, with three powerplay markers and five consecutive goals. A pair from Ebbert and Wilson. Wilson had four points, and was very strong on the point handling the puck. Salcido had a very nice, poised game. Levasseur could not be faulted on either goal.

No Mikkelson in the line-up.

Were you at the game?

I agree with you on Wilson, he really found a new home as a forward. He's a smart player with the puck and has a nice shot.

Ebbett was pretty much as advertised.

As a team, I think they didn't look good. They just didn't have their timing and they made several mistakes defensively. Manchester used their speed to cycle the puck and Portland had a difficult time matching that intensity.

Dingle looked ok, he may not make the team. Same goes for Bobby Bolt. Both were on the bubble as of Friday.

Dingle played on a line with King and Ebbett for most of the game. He was moved to a line with Miller and Keith looked better.

Veideman looked ok....He won't make the team, but could be a call up for the Pirates if they need a defenseman.

Pirates lost today, 5-2 in Berlin, finished the preseason with a 1-1 record.

Quote:
Berlin, NH- The Manchester Monarchs scored three unanswered goals in the third period to claim a 5-2 win over the Portland Pirates on Sunday afternoon at the Notre Dame Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Monarchs opened the scoring on a power play at the 6:56 mark of the second period. Gabe Gauthier rotated the puck from the right wing boards back to Joe Piskula at the right point. From there, Piskula fed a cross-ice pass to Patrik Hersley at the left point, who quickly one-timed a slap shot pass J.P Levasseur.

Yup, I was there (sitting behind the penalty boxes). I was passing through on my way back from a week in Boston.

Just one, Hoffman v. Bagnall at the end of the first.

They got tied up along the boards after a couple of solid hits, each gave a little cross shot to the chops, the period ended, and they dropped the gloves. Hoffman caught Bagnall with a stiff shot early, dropping him to one knee, but Bagnall got back up. Then Hoffman gave three or four more heavy shots - the last an uppercut which sent Bagnall spinning away from Hoffman and the zebras jumped in. Bagnall didn't return.

You should have come up to the press box, we had plenty of seating. It was only myself and the Press Hearld writer.

I hope you enjoyed yourself in Portland.

I was there, not in the Press Box, but at the game. Loved every second of it. Was rather impressed with Matt Keith. He didn't make much of an impression on me last year. Did Saturday though.

Keith looks much more confident this year. I think he had a bit of the deer in the headlights look last season. A lot has to do with the trade to Anaheim and his relationship with Chicago. I think he felt shorted by the Blackhawks and he should have never been in Norfolk last year.

But, I agree he looks much better so far in practice and in the preseason. He needs to maintain that consistency this year. He's going to be look at as somebody who can score.

You want to talk about deer in headlights.... I don't think Miller is very happy to be back in Portland. That was the worst playing I've ever seen him do. I saw the puck just slide right on by him three or four times. I was hoping to see the same old Drew out there, but nope... he was no where to be seen.

Yeah, he looked like he was trying to find his legs. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because it's preseason.
