Top 6 D-men

Once J.Smith is healthy, there will be about 8 defencemen that all could be starters. Which 6 would you choose?

My 6:

Staois-Brewer
J.Smith-Ulanov
Bergeron-Semenov

My guess would be Bergeron being sent to Toronto, and Ferguson being the seventh defenceman.

I would perhaps choose the same, but Semenov and Bergeron have been inconsistent defensively. I would put Cross in for one of them. And trade Ferguson for a 7th round pick.

Ferguson as the 7th because his contract is cheap and you know what you get night in and night out. Say what you want about Ferguson but I think he is a solid 7th d-man and a low maintenance player.

Bergeron will be sent down to the farm. I like Bergeron but I feel he is over rated by a lot poster on the board and I see him as a poor man's Greg Hawgood.

I can't see Smith making it past the trade deadline! Alot of teams would like to have him for a playoff drive.Teams like Atlanta,T.B and others may be willing to overpay for his services. He will want to much money next year and we have to start breaking in some of our top prospects.

I agree 100% with the comparison of Bergeron to Hawgood. He is a good AHL defenseman at best but has no place on the Oilers if they intend on being a decent team. Ferguson as mentioned is a good 7th man.

Eric Brewer/Cory Cross
Jason Smith/Steve Smith
Alexei Semenov/Marc-Andre Bergeron

Unfortunatly, that's it.

Igor Ulanov couldn't crack the Panthers woeful defense, Louma is an AHL'er, Ferguson is an AHL'er.

As for Lynch, I think he could be an NHL'er someday, but not now.

This would be my pick, and unfortunately for M-A-B he's the one I'd send down. Fergie is an excellent #7 d-man and should stay here.

I don't see the demotion as a really big detriment to M-A-B's development though, he's still pretty young for an undrafted d-man and I think that offense is the key to his success at the nhl level. He should be back here when he's firmly on the path to being a 50 pt/season guy.

As for Ulanov, he was a stud here 4 years ago and he's still only 34, it's not unfathomable that he plays some very solid d for us from here on out. I just hope he doesn't bolt on us again, he's already used this franchise as a stepping stone once.

Ulanov: 2gp, 0-1-1pt, +3, 21 mins/game

I really like the look of this d-corps right now. Lots of size and strength, and Brewer and maybe Semenov are the only ones who don't play like they have a bee in their bonnet. A group like this will make our goalies look good.

A player should be judged on his current play. Currently, Ulanov is playing great. Ever consider the fact that the Panthers might have made a mistake?
