Syracuse defenseman Mikko Maenpaa is leaving the team on Tuesday to return to his native Finland.

Maenpaa had two assists in seven games for Syracuse this season, and was a minus-6.

Syracuse coach Ross Yates said Maenpaa told him of his decision Tuesday morning.

"I don't think he played very well,'' Yates said. "He came over here and tried his best, and things didn't work out. He wasn't willing to wait for his chance to get back into the lineup again.''

I think we all saw this coming. Every time we bring over a Euro to help stock the farm, they usually bolt before mid-season. Who was it last year?

Oh well. More playing time for guys like Plekhanov and Wharton.

One of these days, we'll stop this crap....how often do soft Euro d-men succeed in North America?

(Although wasn't this one of Doug's last signings? Hopefully this practice will come to an end with the new regime.)

How has Campbell looked? I looked decent last year in his few games with the Jackets.

I believe Jim Clark was the one who signed him.

Haha Clark's legacy.

The Crunch will have Ben Wright in the mix next year as well, he'll be graduating from the WHL. He's a 2 way guy and could be a long term depth guy for us.

So far, Wright, Wharton, Methot (unlikely, he'll probably be in CBus), Hendrikx and Landry are under contract and in the mix for spots next season.

Campbell and Smith are free agents after this year, and Plekhanov and Redlihs' AHL contracts will expire.

My hope is that Plekhanov is given an NHL-AHL contract. Smith is meh, I'd like to see a pair of reltively big names (AHL wise) be signed to replace him. If Campbell can have a solid season, re-sign him.

Sooo maybe our D could look like:

Plekhanov - FA
Wharton - FA
Wright - Campbell

A quick look at that shows how weak our overall organizational depth at defense is. We were heavy on forwards this past draft, so I expect us to load up on blueliners. Our first rounder will be one. Write that down.

Our first rounder will be a defender.

Done.

I like him. He needs time to continue to adjust to the pro game, but I'm happy with what I've seen so far. Now if they won't scratch him every other game so he can get that experience...

Saw it coming too, but I think it was worth of a shot and risk free. Maenpaa had so damn good last season in Finland. Comparable to Cory Murphy of Florida Panthers who had a great season in finland as well.

Last season it was Janne Hauhtonen with the similar type of move mid-season. At least then I heard that he was told from the beginning that you're not the type of player we thought you were, not sure if the same happened here? Bad communication between scouting and coaching staff! It sounds kinda alarming if that is true in Syracuse, that the players are just told that no way you're going to succeed here instead of working with them. Need to find out how Maenpaa felt about his time in Cuse.

Well, will be fun watching Maenpaa in FEL again

I watched Maenpaa skate in the pre-season rookie practices with the Jackets. I thought he looked pretty good. Hope the Jackets stay in contact with him.

That might be a bit problematic, because Maenpaa broke the contract. I don't know the details, but if Jackets organisation would have wanted to keep him, they would have just placed him under a rental contract with HPK Hameenlinna. Now the ties are cut so it's almost a clear thing he won't be in NHL/AHL again.

This has actually changed quite a lot over the last few years. Earlier, players would play years and years in AHL without getting nowhere. Nowdays if they feel that things are not going like planned, they pack their packs and return to Europe. In Maenpaa's case it's a bit suprising though that he returns to Finland. He would have got a lot higher paycheck in Sweden or Switzerland.

I would bet the organ-eye-zation isn't happy about it either. I know I'm not. I'd rather he be tearing up the AHL.

It's confirmed in this Danish newspaper article. I don't get why they don't let the kid go back to Europe. He is clearly very very sad and depressed about the situation, and there is no reason at all for letting him stay in North America. Let him go home, rebuild his confidence, and let him come back to NA next year.

Platt gone

The other shoe has dropped - Columbus has shaken up the Crunch by trading struggling forward Geoff Platt to the Anaheim organization.

In return, the Crunch is getting forward/defenseman Clay Wilson (3-5 for Portland this season, 9-34 last year) and defenseman Aaron Rome (2-3 this year, 8-17 last season).

Also, Syracuse defenseman Bruno St. Jacques is going to Portland. It's not clear if Syracuse is getting anything back.

The trade came down at about 10:30 a.m. Platt was told right before he took the ice for practice.

If it feels like deja vu, it is. Columbus traded Mark Hartigan and Joe Motzko to the Anaheim organization last year in exchange for Curtis Glencross and Zenon Konopka. That helped turn Syracuse's season around. We'll see if this has the same impact.

Awesome, I get another Crunch game on TV tonight. It's going to be a lazy Friday for me so it looks like I'll see the new Crunchies on the tube and the Jackets on Sopcast.

EDIT: Damn looks like the schedule was changed, the next Crunch game for me is the 24th.
