Just so you know it is entirely within the referee’s discretion to stop play for an injury regardless of game circumstance.

And it wasn't really a punch, imo. The flyers guy took both hands and pushed semin in the upperchest/neck/head area. Semin started to stumble over backwards and then went off camera. He must have stepped on the net.

It's not like the guy cold cocked him with a right hook or anything.
No, it was a straight forward punch, not a cross check, not a shove, not a push, a punch. And one referee did see it he was watching the two players the entire time while the rest of the players, the two linesman, and the other referee skated up ice.

Where did you hear he should be OK for the first game? I hope you are right. Its just I thought I read somewhere that Tarik called him "questionable" for the season opener.

Tarik also said that Semin didn't return for the third period, and that's not true. Tarik's not always 100% correct.

It was more of a straight right than a hook. But other than that it was a 100% sucker punch.

Capitals Note: Winger Alexander Semin (sprained right ankle) did not play last night. The injury, though, is not believed to be serious enough to prevent him from playing in the season opener in Atlanta on Friday.

from the new WaPo article about cutting players

That's pretty funny!

*Sigh*, maybe Nikolishin was auditioning for Ecklund - its a global economy.

Hope so, he wasn't putting any weight on that leg as he left the ice, but he looked ok when he returned later in the period.

It's good they kept him off the ice, I'd rather have him playing in the regular season than in meaningless preseason games.

If he hit his head on the crossbar, that may be like late last year when he got run over by Ovey in center ice = sprained ankle. Ovey laughed at that one. I trust nothing this organization says & to reporters about injuries.

I saw Semin with a buddy of mind in line at the Chinese place on the lower level. He did not seem to be in any pain and there didn't seem to be any ankle brace or "extra" support on his ankle area. He was wearing shoes that wouldn't allow it. I talked to my friend (he's Russian) and both him and Semin seemed to be in a good jovial mood.

Good news, although I was never really worried. He is supposed to play Friday in Atlanta.
