Pittsburgh Penguins journalist in big doo-doo

OK, let me present this to you in chronological order.

This article appears on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
http://postgazette.com/pg/03359/254768.stm

Post-Gazette reporter Dejan Kovacevic is angry about the article and posts about it in a public message board:
http://letsgopens.pookalooka.com/rea...rd=1&id=181345

The Post-Gazette say that Kovacevic is "on assignment":
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04009/259676.stm

The story... Dejan Kovacevic disciplined:

Well theres no doubt the guy took the wrong path for airing his distaste for the original article.

Dejan=smart
Simonich=idiot

Granted Kovacevic is the only competant sports writer in Pittsburgh and Simonich is just some artsy fartsy moron who doesn't know anything about sports...

Now, who knows what's going on with him... he was supposed to appear on a sports show on TV thursday but his appearance was cancelled too.

I'll be pissed if Dejan is let go because of this. Surely it's just some type of suspension or something, but he's probably the best hockey journalist in Pittsburgh.

It's a little ironic that Kovacevic tried to make his point about Simonich doing something unprofessional by doing something very unprofessional (publicly complaining about a colleague) himself. It almost looks like he was trying to get fired. But if he does get canned, I don't think he'll be wanting for work. I've noticed his stuff before, the guy's a good hockey writer, and there aren't enough of those around.

He didn't come out and bash anyone, just pointed out his opinion on a one sided article and encouraged anyone who felt the same way to do so as well.

Simonich never came to defend his article. Guess Dejan was right.

In any case, it looks like Simonich's views are popular enough in Pittsburgh...

I met someone from Pittsburgh last year in Italy and he was saying that he and pretty much everyone he knew wished to see the Penguins leave town because they're "taking money away from the library" and "expect taxpayers to pay for them"

....

...

That's not the general opinion, it's not even the correct opinion. The Penguins expect 0 dollars from taxpayers, and I fail to grasp how they're taking money from libraries.

The Tribune is always printing letters to the editor that are bashing the Penguins, but every single one of the arguments has glaring flaws in them. Non-sports people just don't know what they're talking about.

I don't understand why this guy was "sent on assignment". I guess you can't question biased articles anymore. Its not really a "free" press :p over there is it. You publish what is required and what they want said or your out.

I think he's allowed to question it, just internally. Posting about it on a fan site probably wasn't the best plan of action, although I don't really see anything seriously wrong with it. He had a legitimate gripe.

All it shows is that Simonich wasn't ready to stoop to that level and was bright enough not to hurt his career by making a spectacle out of what should have been kept in-house to begin with.

While I wouldn't be surprised to see Dejan be disciplined, I have to take everything Gary (igloo report editor) says with a grain of salt. It doesnt seem he has any proof and is just speculating (albeit possibly correctly).

Gary isnt to well respected within the online community.

As for Dejan, he let his biggest flaw get to him. He is a SERIOUS Pens fan and he doesnt hide it. I will say this for him though. He isnt a homer. But I think he lets his passion for certain players come through in his work which isnt objective and pretty unprofessional himself.

Something tells me you either met the typical old fart Pittsburgher that doesnt understand they do more then play hockey at an arena.

Or you met a disgruntled, idiot, yinzer Stiller fan that cant stand seeing time taken away from his beloved Stillers, so he wishes the Pens and Pirates would both leave.

The view is much different in young Pittsburgh and old Pittsburgh. Old Pittsburgh would rather see money spent on bingo halls and lottery machines. Young Pittsburgh wants money spent on anything that would give them a reason to stay.

It was actually a young guy, around 25 or so. Not a sports fan at all, though... more like the kind of dude who writes articles in scientific mags or something like that.

If you don't see how it takes money from libraries, you are deluding yourself. There is only so much tax money for discretionary spending. In fact, money for libraries, etc come out of RAD, which would be plunded so that the Pens could afford to pay Alexei Morozov 1.5 million. It's absurd even on the face of it.
Wouldn't RAD go towards the arena, and NOT the payroll? Also, don't libraries take very minimal amounts from the RAD tax, like tens of thousands? That's hardly going to even make a dent in the grand scheme of things.

Apart from anything else, he's about the worst writer I've ever seen on a major paper. He can't string two coherent sentences together. OK, sportswriter are usually hacks who couldn't make it real journalism. That's normal. But this guy is a hack even among sportswriters.
Who, in your opinion, is the best?

So you post at other places than HFBoards?

Funny thing is that with the slots probably coming now, this article becomes pointless. Maybe Simonich can whip out another one about how all the money the casinos will create will be bad too.
