Downie's hit on McAmmond -- Interference or not?

A buddy of mine and I were arguing about this.

We've all seen the hit. Yes, it was excessive. Yes, he left his feet. Yes, it was a head-hunting hit.

But, was this interference? His stance is, "as soon as the puck is dished off, people shouldn't get hit."

Mine is, "you have to be able to finish your check, and there was barely one stride made between McAmmond dishing the puck off and the actual hit."

What's your opinion?
