Phantoms Opening Night Roster released

http://www.phantomshockey.com/pressbox/archive/2030.asp

5 goalies are on the opening night roster!

Boucher is back to wearing his #1. I wonder if he will go back to his original Phantoms mask or wear that horrible mask he wore for the Flyers.

It's going to be a zoo to get there given that the Phils game is a 3:00.

hmmmmm. They aren't seriously going to carry that many players all season long are they?

They'll have to install more doors in the boards for them to open and close if that's the case. Can't have four goalies sitting around doing nothing. Maybe they can work the penalty boxes too.

1 goalie and a handful of players will surely be headed to Wheeling in the ECHL.

Where the 2 other goalies will be shipped is a mystery.

They'll probably carry 3 goalies, if not they have to work out two loan deals. I'm wondering if they're not trying to get Jeremy Duchesne somewhere else in the AHL

That's going to be really tough to do. As we all know most AHL teams have a veteran number 3 guy and a prospect for their AHL affiliate.

My thinking is that Duchesne would be headed for Wheeling while Houle and Beauchemin will be headed to any ECHL/CHL/IHL team that needs a goalie.

Gauthier is going to kill some kid down there. An established NHL defender that can hit like he can must automatically be head and shoulders above most other players despite his flaws. He's definitely not an AHL scrub.

That depends on Gauthier's attitude. He might sulk and play like utter crap or he's going to play his a*s off to get back in the NHL.

Was Mike Vannelli signed to an AHL contract?

Wasn't his Grammy revoked? He was signed on 9/11. No idea on the deal.

Also, Homer apparently played with Vannelli's father.

According to the AHL website only Boucher, Munroe and Beauchemin are on the Phantoms roster.

That is what sucks... he can play his heart out and still won't see the NHL this season. If he starts playing very, very well and we call him back up (unlikely due to the cap) he would get picked up on waivers. Teams will pass on the Goat for 2+ million but they won't even hesitate for half that. Especially in a month or two when injuries start piling up.

There is no way this team puts him on re-entry waivers.

I can not feel bad for someone earning 2.1 million, and not having to move his family to play in the AHL

How does it work for next year? If we want, can he start with the Flyers in '08-'09 without having to pass through waivers again?

Shouldn't Downie be on the Flyers roster so he can serve the 1st game of his suspension tonight? What's the point of having him on the Phantoms roster?

That's what I figured. At least until Nov. 3 when he can play again in the AHL.

apparently Holmer read my message:

Sportsnet.ca -- The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled suspended forward Steve Downie, meaning the Flyers game in Calgary Thursday night will be game one of the 20-game suspension handed down by the NHL.

Flyers' GM Paul Holmgren revealed the club decision to TheFAN590 on Thursday afternoon.

The move comes on the heels of the AHL handing down a one month suspension to Downie for the hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond. The AHL decision means Downie would not be able to find playing time in the minors, so calling up the rookie to begin serving his NHL suspension makes sense.

Downie does not need to be in the building for the suspension to begin. Philadelphia visits Calgary on Thursday in the curtain raiser for both teams.

Duchesne and Houle have been assigned to Wheeling. My guess is that whoever looks the best will stay and the other will be assigned elsewhere.

Odd that Houle was shipped out before Beauchemin as I thought that Beauchemin was a distant 3rd behind Houle and Munroe last season.

Takes the spot of whoever isn't performing on that top line.

This was at the bottom of an article today:

http://www.delcotimes.com/WebApp/app...t_Story_735780

Flyers prospect Steve Downie was officially a Flyer Thursday, but by today might be a Phantom again. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren put Downie on the roster for this opener - officially he was a healthy scratch, though he was in South Jersey at the time - and so it counted as a game against his 20-game NHL suspension.

Since AHL president Dave Andrews ruled that his league would honor the suspension for one month until Nov. 3, Downie has no place to play between now and then. So the Flyers will try to at least count down his suspension term while he has an extended practice season.

"We had a couple of different options we could pursue," Holmgren said of the Downie situation. "But for now we thought we could pick and choose (games). When Nov. 3 comes around, we hope we've chipped quite a few games off it."
