Brooks picks the Rangers to win the _ _ _

Can't write the word

The Rangers are going to be very, very good and very, very entertaining. First place in the Atlantic. A parade down the Canyon of Heroes, this one 40 years ahead of schedule.

Believe this: These aren't your older brother's older Rangers. Yes, they are built to win now with 35-year-old Jaromir Jagr, 38-year-old Brendan Shanahan and 35-year-old Martin Straka among the top-six forwards. But there's depth up front now - hello Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Ryan Callahan, Petr Prucha, Brandon Dubinsky, and Mr. Avery - meaning there's no need to pile up unsustainable minutes on the seniors.

What's more, the Blueshirts enter the season with 14 players on the roster age 27 or younger, with 11 (including 20-year-old freshman defenseman Marc Staal, likely to make his debut tonight) no older than 25. This isn't only about the 2007-08 team, this is about establishing a template

I don't see them winning the Atlantic but I would be happy if they did but I hate the analysts expecially him making predictions so early and possibly jinxing the team

Let's not get too worried about the NY media over inflating its expectations of a new york team, especially the Post.

I was reading the Metro this morning on the subway and Avery is quoted in there saying something along the lines of "Just play, just effing play". I like that attitude and i think the team will do a good job of tuning them out. It's only a jinx if you believe in jinxes

I think the Pens will win the division but Rangers have better chance of advancing further in the playoffs. Fleury is a sieve

It's nice to play the underdog, but there's no way this team could be considered an underdog. Not after the Gomez and Drury signings. Not after their run last year.

They're rightly considered contenders this year...of course that makes me nervous, because you never know how things will go. But it's better than being considered basement dwellers...

Nervous too, Levitate...

rather go into the season somewhere in the middle of the pack and surprise. But then again, it's nice to start with a strong roster.

Yeah, I'm mainly nervous because of the additions and we don't know how well the team will mesh yet.

I really think this team is worlds different than the teams of the late 90's/early 00's. I think chemistry will be better than it was on those teams that were thrown together. But it's still a bit nerve wracking to see high priced free agents and wonder how well they'll perform. I guess I'm trained to cringe at that.

But then I look at the rest of the roster and realize that the Rangers are starting the season with 4 rookies on the roster, and a large amount of players under 25, and that makes me realize how different things are these days.

I hate predictions, especially when they're based completely on paper.

It's better when there are no expectations - then anything gained is a pleasant surprise. Brooks should shut his mouth. Between him and everyone saying that the refs are going to dog us all season, I'm already ticked off and the games haven't even started yet.

I can deal with the fact that they over inflate the expectations because most places that make those off season moves would too. I am readin in Philly on the same level. However what I am more concerned about is players getting that mindset and not playing like Avery said. That is a fantastic attitude to have I hope the whole team adopts that over everything else they see on tv or read. Maybe Brooks will be onto something if that happens

With the "leadership" and "intangibles" guys like Shanny bring the Rangers should be able to withstand the expecations....

Interesting - unless I misread his article, Betts and Hossa don't get a mention.

From the same Brooks article

Quote:
The Rangers don't have a stud on the blue line, but then, who does in the East, where essentially every team other than Ottawa appears needy on defense, just the way essentially every team in baseball appears needy in the bullpen? That said, the upside for the Baby Blueshirts on the blue line could be immense, with 24-year-old, third-year man Fedor Tyutin and 23-year-old, sophomore Dan Girardi partnering on the second unit and with 20-year-old Marc Staal's ceiling as high as your imagination.

Michal Rozsival emerged as a horse during the playoffs and Marek Malik will accept the boos while accumulating his usual plus-30 complementing Jaromir Jagr. While Staal, Tyutin and Girardi grow into more assertive offensive players, the Rangers don't appear to have a puck-carrying threat on D. Neither do they have a great first-passer on the breakout
.
The guy in Phoenix is not a puck carrying threat and doesn't make a great first pass which is why those "rumors" are BS

I mean, if you want superb breakout passing, you usually need a top end offensive guy, and we know the Rangers don't have that. But if you want good breakout passing, you can get that with the players the Rangers have...

At any rate, it makes me hope that Sanguinetti pans out as the player we all want him to be...
