I'm guessing his purpose is to fill in for the next couple of weeks until we get our injured players back. Beyond that I don't think we'll be seeing him. I'd rather have Johnson than Leeb or Wellwood.

John Ferguson, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Saturday that the club has claimed forward Craig Johnson off waivers from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.Johnson, 31, has played 39 games for Anaheim this season collecting three points (one goal, two assists) with 14 penalty minutes. He collected his first point (assist) of the season November 28 versus Chicago and scored his first goal of the season December 27 at Florida

That very well could be true. I've thought all along that to get a defenseman, we'd have to trade one of or a combination of Antropov and Ponikarovsky. But if we had a healthy lineup I don't know if Johnson would be in there. I guess we'll find out.

I like this move.

Can't have enough defensive players and good skaters who put in effort going into the playoffs.

Much like a Fitzgerald type.

Yep, looking at his bio from tsn, he's a PK specialist. Another character guy for sure I suppose. He almost put up 40 points in 97, so he's got some offense I guess. He's fast too, which I like.

Can't hurt. He's an asset that cost npthing but a little cash. Likely he will be able to help out the baby leafs when we get healthy again, unless Anaheim wants him back.

Says he is prone to long term injuries. Why grab a guy that is prone to more injuries?

For those who care, Johnson makes only $500,000 a year and he's not a bad addition considering the injuries that the Leafs have.

$500,000 divided by 2 (half the season is done) = $250,000

That's if they keep him the rest of the regular season.

Good point, does his contract expire after this year?

Most likely.

They wouldn't take on a contract that runs past this season.

See Claude Lapointe during 2003 playoffs.

A speedy defensive player can do some serious damage in the post season.

Wouldn't that make him the perfect choice than he will feel right at home on IR with the rest of the gang...

Hew if it means Belak's 4th line spot is now taken ...So be it..

Also I think Leaf fans should not get to excited ...Remember every team in the NHL passed on him and only Detroit did not get a chance to pick him up.. So that must tell us something...

Other NHL teams aren't going through the injury trouble we have been.

True. Craig Johnson is hardly an impact player. He fell out of favor with the fans, last year with the Kings. He signed a free agent contract during the offseason with the Ducks. I've been impressed with his speed, defensive play, and his work ethic. He is a good penalty killer, and has some, but not a lot, of offensive skills. If you expect him to score, you'll be disappointed. If you expect hard work, skating ability, and defensive play, I think you will be happy with what Johnson can bring to the team.

Two differences. One Green makes 1.6 million, Johnson makes 500,000. Second Johnson isn't a problem in the locker room like Green has been.

And Johnson probably doesn't take stupid penalties.
